Something I started yesterday on a whim, and finished earlier today. I'll be starting on my ANDRO✰ comic again. This character has something to do with the story, but wont show up until much much later, in fact, they're quite distant to the actual story for now....I'll start updating it once I finish with chapter 2, so the next update should be at least 10+ pages.

The showing in Winchester went alright, but could have gone better I think tbh. But enough of that. Need to keep looking forward. I have another showing at a pretty snazzy cafe called "Flirt" in April. So I'm trying to ...get myself all sorted out for that.

I also opened myself an Etsy Shop so you can check that out. Selling prints on the cheap yo. I'll be updating it with more work soon....

    /dead.

I'm kind of happy with how it's coming out for now..still need to learn how to plan my pictures better. I have an idea for the background and all but...should have fleshed it out a bit more before refining him...

I'm so confused about life right now.

The blue reflections in the face is gorgeos in the newest picture. And what is the thing with the recurring melting eye? Is it you invention?

Great sketchbook! I really like your pencil work and how you are rendering skin, very solid technique developing here. Don't worry about comparing yourself to others, try to not think about things that can make you feel insecure, find the joy in drawing and just keep doing it!! You've got a distinctive technique and if you keep honing it you will certainly carve out your place in this vast world.

@Axelga2112: Thanks! I think I need to mess around with the tones of the picture a bit though to get it a bit more..rich maybe? And as far as the melting eye thing, that's just me drawing the same guy, over and over and over again because I'm quite fond of him and his melty eye.

@aargh!: Thank you! What a lovely thing to say. I'm pretty attatched to this particular picture as it's kind of got some significance through the thought process and what the character stands for really..I just hope I can keep it looking good as I continue to work on it.

@fersteger2: Thanks for he encouragement! It's pretty upsetting for me sometimes for me to go through my own sketchbook and read some of the things I say about myself and my progress. I think I tend to feel most positive when working, but suddenly become very negative when posting. I'm trying to break the habit of coupling my work with negative things I see in it. It's not a good experience for anyone! Thanks again.

I forced myself to do some speed paints and stuff, because I never do those and I have my eyes set on a job somewhere. so...

Worked on this for an hour...someone suggested I draw a nurse sphinx that eats people. Didn't really get to do much actual sketching on this one before started painting it. Which always turns out bad for me.

Worked about an hour and a half on this one right after. Think I was a bit more clever with colours this time around...

hey man really nice sb,good line weight, interesting designs and that red headed photo study is great.
I read some of your posts about feeling subdued by the universe and that kind of thing...sometimes when you see the sea of talent on ca it can get a bit depressing
but if you look on sketchbooks like algenflegers and mindycandyman(i think I misspelled that) you can definitely be encouraged that huge change is possible-all it takes is persistence.
anyways,I would love to see more quasi traditional stuff like that red head study and less stylized stuff,I think that would push your improvement a lot more.

keep posting and cheer up, the universe is on your side(yeah i am that cheesy).

@crisimikiwiki: Thank you! I still think I need to have a better grasp of what colours work together and what doesn't. And I'm trying to vary my pallet a bit more now, but worrying about things looking garish now...

@GrayPersona: Thanks for the comfort yo. Yeah I've always just gravitated towards painting what I enjoy painting, as I always felt like I should enjoy my subjects and that was the purpose of art. I tend to do frantic half assed studies when I feel incompetent. I try to do more these days, but I guess I just never get too far with them as I get bored. Not really a good thing at all, but something I think I'm slowly getting over. I always had the idea that each picture I do was something like a study in itself. But I think I see now it just doesn't work that way...

@llex_paul: Thank you. I guess perhaps I will make something unique. Maybe. Maybe I won't. Hard to tell sometimes.

@mundanity: Thank you for the lovely comment. Never really thought of it as "breath taking" as I feel a bit under accomplished for my age, but I'll try and think fondly on this comment when I'm in the worst of my worst pits of self doubt.

It feels strange updating this often, but I did another 2 hour practice on these things. well almost three, nearly an hour and a half on each

I think I need to have better control over my pallet, the colours are a bit all over the place with this one. I like the head, I like the body, but together they seem a bit miss matched. I think if I either make the body more rich , or tone down the head a bit it would make more sense. I spent about an hour and a half on this. I really screwed up with the tail fin. I just didn't take my time to think about what I was doing before I put pressure to the pen.

About an hour on the horse, and 15 minutes on the little man. Not too satisfied with the colours on this one either. I think I could have made them a bit more subdued and ...not phantom like, but airy and light.

Over all I feel I didn't do bad today being distracted and all, but I feel like I could have applied myself better. I need to really focus on delivering some depth now into environments, refining more precisely, and really capturing complementing colours, while still keeping the picture rich, and not too saturated.

    Commission I'm finishing up.

Still have lots of the face to fix up. He doesn't look particularly handsome yet or anything. But I thought I better actually focus on other parts of the picture before I focus too much on the face. Otherwise I'd spend hours and hours on it or days before anything got done. This one has taken me a bit of time, but over all I'm fairly happy with how some of the renderings come out. Still need to do some better detail on the bodice bit. Will probably do that tomorrow. Then after finishing him up then it will just be the background and making the ring more interesting...

I uh. quit my job. It wasn't going so well there. So now it's super art focus time. After I finish this commission Ill be free to work on personal shit and study again. I do sometimes do studies but they just look so god awful sometimes that I don't even want to post them haha.

Anyway, going to go back to hitting up the cafe's and looking up some local art markets. I wish my future self good luck.

Also, Everything Everything came out with a new album.

@[b]Murderotic[b]: Thanks! Lots of learning still to do yet. I still don't feel like I mesh my textures well together, and I feel like my skin work is becoming kind of plastic-y again. At least with paler skin tones...

    F*CKING
    LOVE
    YOUR
    SKETCHES!!!

But I don't like the way you render them. The pencil sketches seem to ooz this sort of darkness and your rendering takes the piece the complete opposite way. It's well executed but I just don't like the style. Anyway, you have a sick mind that is great at creating cool art, keep making it!

You have such a lovely style that's easy on the eye! It kind of reminds me of Fiona Staples, who illustrates Saga but yours feels a bit more elegant and I can totally see you doing a fairy tale type comic book.Btw,how do you draw hands, noses and eyes so well? The obvious answer might be "lots of practice" but maybe you're doing something extra.

I would like to become a comic book artist myself in the future but I'm progressing pretty slowly and that can really put you down sometimes.
Anyway,I'm subscribing to your thread and I look forward to seeing your updates.Cheers!

@Grafguy: You know what, I am totally inclined to agree. I really don't like how I paint and how I render my figures. I do sometimes feel that they are lacking a sort of feeling to them...they sometimes look to clean. I have really only started taking painting a bit more seriously in the last three years (did flat colours for everything before that really, or just typical shitty teenage digital painting), and I am kicking myself in the teeth when I contemplate why I've waited so long. Anyway, after thinking a bit about my process, I think there are two things to blame., Firstly, I try to stop all, if any, sketchbook paper from showing through. So I end up closing off all my figures trying to stop those grainy lines from peeking from underneath. And secondly, I really lack texture in my pictures, so they look very flat and plain. So I'm going to try and experiment a bit more with textures within my finished pieces. Thank you for the lovely and honest comment! I think it may have been something I could see as well, but was too lazy/scared to try and fix the problem.

@GrayPersona: Thank you! I think sometimes I think i shouldn't rely so heavily on my Mucha influences. And yes, i should post more studies, but then I just feel so ... vulnerable (*・ω・`)ノ I'll try better!

@dimi: Thanks for the comment buddy! Always room for improvement. I should really try to do more traditional painting as well...(。・ω・。)

@Kriss_Kringle: Oh wow what a compliment Kriss! I've never heard of Fiona Staples before, but she has fantastic work! I love her use of negative space, and has a great eye for composition! As far as drawing hands and noses?...well I'm not sure to be honest (*・ω・`) ! I never really had that stage of being afraid to draw hands when I was younger, so I just usually include them in pictures. I also find them to be one of the most expressive parts of the body so I just focus on them a lot. I have no real tricks or anything, except looking at hands. As far as noses...hmm well I guess the only "trick" I do for that is to try and imagine the gradients on the shape similar to that of a pyramid (trying to break it down to a very simple shape). I still think I can have the nose seem like it has more depth, but I still haven't figured out how haha.

Oh, and don't ever wait to be "good enough" to do a comic. You keep thinking like that and you'll never start. Every page you do will always be better than the last one. No matter how good you are. Your comic may look like shit at first, but if you just keep working at it, it will take form eventually. That is how I see it anyway. I think there are probably more capable comic book artists that would have way better advise than me!

I think the pillows are super fun to make. I wish I could have had more of the actual picture included on the cosmic pillow, but it just didn't work with the spacing and all.

Here is a quick quick picture I kept forgetting to post. I never really do landscape type things, so I had a kind of hard time capturing the feel of how the place should look. It was difficult, I wanted the buildings and city to have a kind of warm feel and the canyon to be cold...hard to explain. But maybe I can better capture it next time.

Lastly, is something I started working on after watching the movie The Fall. The film is much more beautiful than the trailer leads on. Just all around good and it really filled me with something. Anyway, I will be livestreaming it in a bit. Hopefully it comes out to be how I want it to. I always wanted to do a blue skin tone, and I'm so excited I've finally come up with something that allowed me to use it.

Love the line drawings and graphical pieces. That minotaur piece could use some better depth control tough (cast the background in shadow, so the characters stand out).

@Tea of Doom: Thanks for the comments! And yeah, I suppose adding that bit of darkness really could have set the characters apart. I guess I'm having trouble melding the environment I see in my mind with the characters. Perhaps I should start thinking about them separately all the time. For a picture i was trying to "speed paint" that one bit of advice probably would have made a dramatic difference. I'll keep this in mind in the future!

    @Berserk.: Thank you!

Not much of an update. Just the usual spending hours and hours painting the same god damned thing because reasons.

I did realise though that sometimes through a long process of work I melt the eyes and mouth of the face in my picture. I never have the intentions of keeping it there but it really relaxes me if I'm getting particularly stressed out and a bit "stuck" in the the dullness of constantly honing the figure. This time I though it looked alright and seriously contemplated keeping it like that, but at the same time it feels kind of gimmicky. Perhaps my stress relief should stay just as that. The picture is coming along all right, but you know. Just want it fixed right away! haha. I'm finiding it especially tricky to keep the pseudo male upper body and feminine lower half.

Oh and I forgot to post this ages ago.

I was particularly frustrated with this one. It started out as a gift picture that I owe to someone, but I was just feeling really down about my work and the sort of vapidness they have from time to time. I kind of like the idea of the picture, but it's one of the types that it's so incredibly unfocused in my mind, its really hard to imagine how to execute what I see... Maybe I can get back to it, or restart it sometime. Oh, and he would have had a pien if I were to finish the picture, but just never got up to it...i think perhaps I should just go back and finish at least that part. hah. (*・ω・`)

There's something about those androgynous figures that I can't put my finger on. You like playing and tricking the viewers into thinking that what they're looking at is something feminine. Once they take closer look and see all the masculine features they'll all be like: "Wait a minute, that ain't a chick." Is confusing people a key element in your work ?

@JakehC: Thanks! A really lovely thing of you to say!

@Chris592: I'm just going to have to say I'm totally confused by this post (*・ω・`)

@ozark: Great observation haha. Though I wouldn't say confusion is a -key- element to my work, it is definitely part of it. I use to get a lot of enjoyment out of peoples confusion when i was much younger (I have no clue why), and can't help but get that same giddy-ness if it happens today. The main thing though is that I just don't find the stereotypical male model look attractive or the overtly physically masculine. I just find men sexier this way I guess. I just paint what I like, as do most peoples, and I (unfortunately?) androgynous men incredibly appealing.

And with that, I leave you this. I was supposed to be doing a proper poster for Andro again to kind of get me in the spirit of finishing these pages I have left to ink but that didn't happen. It isn't deep or thought provoking by any means, but I had to let off some stress (trying to learn about these god damned printing profiles and shit and just life in general), so.

@Betty86: Thanks for keeping up with me dear! Ive noticed your avitar and recognised you right away haha. I havn't been doing much pencil work lately but starting to get in the mood for doing more. As far as the tentacle one...well it's kind of died down on me now haha. I might finish it later though.

I have been playing way too much Assassin's Creed 3 multiplayer and love the Hessian! So I did this.

Will probably livestream in a minute again. Need to fix up his face a bit more, it's not looking quite how I'm imagining it. Also his foot is broken. Fixing that now but such a pain in the ass for real.

Anyone want to play multiplayer with me O:!?!?!?!?!
