    Cardinal Portrait Commission

Hello everyone, I have just completed an oil portrait of His Eminence John Cardinal Foley. The portrait will hang in Vatican City at The Palazzo della Rovere where His Eminence is stationed. You can find more of my work at my website, www.willnathanspaintings.com. Thank you for taking a look!

Its great, but you could have gotten the same end result by taking a photograph and applying some photoshop effects to it.

Looks like Jesus' donkey is about to nibble his head. But as said, nice realism.

    Dear fellow artists,

Thank you for your very kind comments. The painting will hang in the Columbus Hotel in Vatican City also known as the Palazzo della Rovere. It was an honour to paint one of the Princes of the Church.
The painting on the back wall is of my own design( with the help of a certain Fr. J. MaGuinn of Manyunk, PA) which represents Christ entering Jerusalem. This is signifigant because it represents John Cardinal Foley's mission as a Cardinal in his order which is based in Jerusalem. It is called the Equestrain Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepluchre in Jerusalem. The red is made prominant as a symbol of a Cardinal's devotion to Christ in that he will shed his own blood if necasary in order to defend Christ and His Church in all places.

    NICELY DONE!

Oh, and a thanks for helping to keep traditional mediums alive. There simpily is not a substitute for real hands on brush work.

Now, I'm also wondering about those hands. I'm assuming that his right hand is in the light coming in from a window and the other is picking up some warmer interior light. I probably would have adjusted along the way; made a compromise, perhaps by taking some of that warm color and adding it to his right hand and vice versa.

Regardless, it's a remarkable painting. How big is it? and how did you go about the application of color? What was your process? And is it on canvas or panel?

Very good, but IMHO more lighting/color contrast would have done a lot for it. The blacks don't look very black to me, and the colors aren't very intense. Great job though, and congrats on the commission!
