However, I am very surprised nobody has gone the AI route. I could see an very profit-driven company (say Microsoft) designing a robot jouster and lobbying to have it classified as "sentient" due to its extremely complex and self-aware programming.

They pay "it" nothing and rake in the profit from marketing and advertising.

Oh... and when exactly is the deadline? I have been working late nights but really want to get this in. Will I have until midnight Monday EST or is there a definite cutoff?

Finally getting to the character (still really lose). The beginnings of my Steed and Lance designs can be found Here. The sponsoring company is "Olympus Mining Corp. Your source for Helium 3 since 2671." I haven't come up with a name yet but he used to be a grunt in the mines. The mining company originally started out as the Olympus underground on Mars (smuggling refugees off planet) during the Helium 3 wars. However toward the end of the war the leadership was gradually bought off or killed off and the refugees provided the perfect labor force to mine in the harsh conditions on the Terran moon, Jovian moons, and the Asteroid Belt. This guy was chosen by Olympus Mining to be their Jouster. Big and mean, he's a little older than your average jouster but he's still one of the best. He's not the sort of person you want children to look up to. He enters any jousting match where a governorship is up for the prize. However his wits don't match up to his ambition, for whenever he goes in for a governorship he always seems to loose, for Olympus Mining rigs these games for him to lose (usually by sabotaging his equipment).

Alright, Ill work on more futuristic elements on him. I guess i did stray a bit far into barbarian style. But hell, maybe he is a human who upgraded his dna to become far more powerful for this event, for im sure it would be possible in 700+ years.

so this is the first time i've participated in a chow or anything so i hope im doin this shit right. im assuming this is where we post wips but if its not someone please lemme know i tried to make my character look like he was competing in some sort of a sporting event but now i think maybe his suite and armor may not be futuristic enough? anyway, everything is still pretty rough and his proportions are all jacked up at the moment but they should be all straight when im finished hopefully. lemme know wut yall think

finally had time to render some more.
gotta say this is the first time i'm really thrilled to see what everyone's come up with/is coming up with. so many good designs. (maybe cause they all, despite differences, fit so well together? i can well picture any of these going head to head against each other, love it)
if i had any clue about mechanics i might have explored more beforehand, but like this i pretty much jumped into the painting, designing as i go (yeah, bad way,i know); but i still like the kinda semi-organic look.
any blatant mistakes i'm missing? still can't get the lance to look quite like it's coming forward. btw, programmable length, double use as sword

@carnifex: i think maybe if it had some rings somewhere on the lit area (maybe just different color or something) it would give it some more form to look like it's more foreshortened.

@jason: looking awesome! my fave so far. i love your take on it!

Wow, great sketches Pixeltuner and Gerezon! Nice clean lines and excellent technique! Love it!

I went for a bio-engineered steed, by then it might be possible

I always struggle with sharpness, I use Painter and maybe it's my choice of brushes. When I use hard edges lines come out jagged, so I stick to blending but it's a lot of work. Any suggestions?

@Carnifex, the only suggestion i could make is to make the lance itself a bit longer, for right now it would barely reach over your steed, let alone hit your enemy with enough force to score a point. But other then that, its looking good so far. I know it says programmable length, but you could show us the length that a lance would have instead of a saber-like blade.

@Gerezon, for your steed, it looks awesome, but the only suggestion for it is the front. It looks like it is facing us to much compared to the rest of the steed, which is like a 3/4ths view.

Carnifex - I think you have made awesome progress, but I think the problem I am having with your piece is the all the things competing for attention at once. Because the background and your jouster/steed all have the same values and saturation, and they are layerd on top of one another, it is hard to tell what is in front, the depth, and get a good read on the silhouette. I would probably take the background down a bit, if it were mine. Also, I dunno about the tangent where the edge of the stands lines up with the edge of your canvas.

Jason - looks awesome... reminds me of Jon Foster for some reason. Keep going!

@anastasky: looks good! the face area is kinda confusing though.

didn't get much done today cuz i had other stuffs to do. next up is doing the flag/lance and the shield, and adding the helmet visor. and no the heraldry isn't done yet!!

i mostly worked on her face to make her look cuter and younger since she was looking a tad bit mannish in the previous version. she has a pocky in her mouth. personally i can't stand the stuff but i'm convinced somehow 700 years later people still will be shelling out money for it.

hm,as in desaturate? i don't quite know how to tackle the whole issue because in space you don't actually have atmosphere,so I'm not sure whether the "add more blue" rule works out...
edit: hm desaturation seems to be the key...in greyscale,it's nicer on the eyes...

Just a window from the painting in progress... hoping I will finish on time. I have to work the weekend so its going to be tight.

Conceptually I have Heinrich's background & concept worked out. He's an ex null-gravity pit fighter and combat merc from the underslums of New Berlin turned professional jouster.

His style is brutal, direct, and rides a fine line between strategy and foul play.

    WIP.

Will hopefully have the rest of the stuff done for this. Herald, sponsor logos , etc still need to be added. Helmet will prob be a separate image.

I probably spent more time thinking about the sport than necessary...

Ooh! My first CHOW! I've only just started on the character though. Please say if he's a bit wonkey.

    Prepsage - Lop-sided armour rocks!
Jspangler - that's probably the most evil looking knight I've ever seen.

    So many cool entries.

Here're how I've done so far, pretty wipeout inspired, but hopefully with a more painterly feel... The shields are floating panels controlled but magnetic technology, and controlled by the rider. Hopefully I'll start cramming on some advert space for MagTec Corp.

Holy Crap, Tomers - I love that "steed". And the armor design... looks durable, tough, and has some clean lines. Really nice perspective work. Are you doing that the "old fashioned" way? Or is there some trick to it?

Cheers jspangler! Ha, well we'll see if it's still looking tough after I've tried to render it. And yep, it's all done the old fashioned way. That was about my 4th biro sketch to get the perspective right, and now I'm wacom colouring in photoshop.

I do the same. Sketch, scan, and wacom (PS or Painter). I used to work traditionally so its the same process. Mechanical objects in perspective always give me trouble.

Lot of nice entries here... can't wait to see everyone's finals.

update, fixed some posture/balance things in the legs but there's still something wonky somewhere. Also been adding and removing some design thingies on the suit. Still not there yet
