Man, im not very good with characters. Im trying my hardest, for this one my first time literally putting it all out there. But im not quitting god-dammit! Here is my work so far. Ship is hidden right now for it looks like complete shit and needs some work.

But lets see if I can pull a story out of my ass at least....

I tried.....its going to take some time.....we will just call him Griffin for now though. Lets say he is excessively brutal and violent, and never shows mercy, even to those who do.

His suit is a nano-carbon fiber alloy suit made for high impact resistance and muscle enhancement. It makes him about 5 times stronger then normal, which is needed to lift the 200 pounds of armor strapped to the suit, the 150 pound lance, and hold onto a steed that can go up to 300 miles per hour.

The lance is a unique concept. Instead of being energy based or solid, it is composed of numerous bands which interlock with eachother. Inside the lance is a series of air pumps and springs. When impact is made onto the tip, the metal bands compress into eachother, and the pumps, springs, and resistance all push up, causing either the lance to push with extreme force, or just pierce through the enemy with ease. The gold colored rods on both sides are to stop it from going in to far, and to trigger the lance to go off and push. Wow, I can pull that out, but I cant make a story!?

    looking great every 1 ^^
    my concept is this:
    vincent and the black shadow.
vincent, a real underdog in the pangalactic jousting tournament.
he made his fortune as a scrappie.
finding old wrecks and hulks in deeps space and towing them back for scrap.
he spent his last red pence on building his steed. the black shadow.
when a man has a dream he will work his whole life to get it.
he makes up for his lack of high end parts with his determination and skill

the steed is based roughly on the classic motorbike the 'vincent black shadow'
thats where i got the char and steed name from
    still working on a logo.

nplaxco: nice concept, and i do think large conglomerate companies like starbucks could easily survive 700 years, dynasties have lasted as long why not companies?

dwinbotp: cool char design, though the steed is a little chunky for my tastes, though saying that in zero grav weight and shape is'nt that much of an issue XD
makes u wonder about all those aerodynamic spaceship designs.

    zweidee: love it vry stylish

wiggers: reminds me a little of the warhamer 40k emperor art, i like theway his logo, the lion, is apart of him to, good idea.

pixeltuner:hmm i'd make the lance longer, their freaking huge irl, part from that looking good

    nutter: luverly bike design

n3wtn: that would be awesome soldiers riding different starwars vehicles,
    darth riding the deathstar XD

jspangler: german, luv it! hmm to improve?: add a handle to the fattest part of the lance to make it look like a beer jug

digitalblacksmith: hmm his left arm looks a little crushed, might be the shoulder pads coming to far round his chest? also maybe u could try add some flashy stuff to make it look like a futuristic armour made in the style of ancient china? stuff

eamannick: cool, can imagine ure going to add lots of detail

carnifex: great anatomy, though i cant stop but think of metroid prime every
time i look at it must be the shoulder pads, oh and i think without the
tendrils on the steed, they dont suit it, but it needs something else instead to make it standout.

    so many entries XO

jessibean: looks great, are you not going to put the steed in? i'd love to see it in the same style as her

tommoy: i like the bottom right one, in the shape of an animal

norsehound: good start, love the lance , his pose is a little unnatural, if he was real i think he'd fall foward, try balance it a little more.

Aag; Nice ideas. I really like what you're going for. That last one almost has this "parade before the main event" type of thing going for it. (Reminds me of the Il Palio in Siena, Italy ... the Annual Horse Race there lasts for 90 seconds, but before the race there's a huge ceremonial parade where knights decked out in original armor are blessed by the cardinal.)

I'm finding this chow to be a real challenge. I usually don't do future...or sporting concepts very often. And right now I have a bunch of ideas but I'm having trouble focusing them into one design. Ah well. back to drawing.

Just some quick thoughts. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with the lance or flag yet so those are just kind of placeholder. The horse in the background is an idea for decorating the STEED, I like the idea of high tech mixed with ornate decoration.

    Any thoughts?

There is some awesome stuff going on here.

This CHOW is going to end up with all the character concept work you would need for a modern remake of "Joust".

jspangler: it would make a brilliant game, where every char and steed is playable.
t'would be nice if ca did a competition where the whole community could contribute to a single game

    Hi guys!
Going to try my first CHOW.
    Here's my rough composition:

And I'm going to use the right one of these sketches for the character I think. Tried to start on the above picture but wasn't looking right. Not sure if I'm biting off more than I can chew here.

I'm going for a 'moment of calm before the joust' kind of feel with this to show the bond that exists between the rider and his or her steed. Cos I thought the bond humans have with our animals is something that wouldn't change that much over time. So this is a biomechanical horse! I know that's not clear in the sketches and stuff but that will change
As for the character - well I am using my own surname and heraldry. The symbol being a waterwheel and the colours will be blue and yellow. Any guesses on my surname? LOL. And the sponsor will be a flour brand to tie in with the waterwheel

Anyways - some kind of crit would be welcome even though I havent got much to show yet. Still a noob to all this and I hope I can finish in time.

Oh and JessiBean, yours is going to another awesome submission!!

Looking fantastic, guys, and thanks for another awesome topic! Especially zweiDee, Nutter and PixelTuner, great job with the sketches.

Here's our shot, although I'm not sure if the character is visible enough for us to participate in this CHOW. Anyhow, the front wheel is for parking only, the steering can be done with the side engines, which the rider controls with his feet. There is also a bigger engine at the back to give this STEED some extra boost.

As a daughter of Minister of Martian Affairs Marcus Thompson, Sam has always had easy access to experimental military tech. Developed by former lightbulbs, kitchen-gear and televisions producing company Philips's experimental Philips Nano division, Sam's suit is a prime example of some skilled engineering.
Her suit fits like normal racing outfit, only slightly thicker than normal cloth. It hardens on kinetic impact (like Batman's cape does while being electrified) which protects her from harm while keeping her extremely mobile and able to dodge most attacks with ease.
It's still vulnerable to cutting or stabbing weaponry (that's why the army uses a thicker but less mobile variant of the suit) but Jousts have had their points dulled since the incident of 2681...

Looking good guys and gals, very good.

So, time for an update. Started refining and putting in some details, then got
carried away with that faux collectible card idea which i totally had to
implement now instead of working on the character. *facepalm*
Well, at least I've got that out of the way now and can concentrate on the
    important things.

Jason Snair:thanks, with your ideas its just best to flesh them all out and find which one you like the the best. sometimes a small sketch can lead to or influence an idea more than your first initial concept will. believe me everything justs kind of melds together after that. you'll notice shapes and elements that you like and you stick with those.hope that helps.

though i'm still undecided with mine as well. i'll continue to work on both and decide on one in the end.right now its morning in okinawa and i got to get some food in my bellytill
    next post keep crank n

Okay, so I think I've landed an idea.

I started thinking today about the Il Palio horse races in Siena, Italy and how the before-hand there are these elaborate parades showcasing real Renaissance style armor. That got me thinking.

What if in the 2700's they do the same thing with us. They put on these elaborate jousting competitions to mimic the real space race that went on when man first left the confines of Earth. Each side dons, old-tech inspired suits, similar to the genesis NASA suits and Cosmonaut ones.

I hope that doesn't stray too far from the brief.

So I'm going for an illustration that kind of represents that ideal. The suit is kind of generic right now, and isn't going to look exactly like our current day suits...but along those lines.

So far this has been the only idea that actually liked.

Norsehound - Lower his shield a bit so we see more of his arm and adjust the pack to the left, right now it looks off center.

ArtofInca - I like the first one, it's a hoverbike but also mosquito-like.

Pixeltuner -Just personal preference, but I'd like if the bikes had some more lineweight, to help distinguish depth, relation of seat to front, etc.

Here's mine so far, I thought fat knight on put-put STEED. With a massive energy lance.

It's exciting to see what everyone's ideas are so far. This is my first time participating in anything on CA.org - I'm really more of a lurker. I'm excited about the topic and am looking forward to seeing everyone's finished pieces.

After sketching a bunch of thumbs and character studies and looking at a mindnumbing amount of reference the last two days, I put together a couple roughs/colorcomps. I still have to flesh out the details for the heraldry and come up with a better solution for the lance. Right now I'm thinking some sort of hologram coil/helix thing. Maybe the hologram shatters like glass or distorts like a wave on impact. And I'll probably play with some color shifts before I start the final.

And you know what!? Fuck this guy! I have a new idea and am doing good with this one. But i got to thinking. This is 700 years into the future. Look how many advancements we have made since 1200's. Dont you think that by then, we would have found maybe an alien race, or created some sort of new humanoid species? So I am now working on a reptilian barbarian jouster. Tell me what you think!

not sure if i can finish this week cuz i'm busy but i threw some quick colors on... old wartime colors hehe. it was supposed to be a guy but it looked better as a rosie the riveter type... i'll have to think about it. (might appear dark on some ppl's screens)

maybe something like united states inc. buy wartime bonds type image. the coat of arms in the bg is going to be a fuzzy broadcast image and the flag will double as a lance.

Looking good, HP! Like the muted colourscheme.

Digital Blacksmith: If you want my honest opinion, it strays really far from the brief, for a few reasons. Though it's not explicitly stated, it is implied to be a human sport based on the original human sport. Also there is nothing in your current design to hint at any sort of future or even modern day technical ability.

Making up reasons to entertain certain ideas and to add certain elements is fine, but ultimately we should be able to understand what we're looking at without having to read an explanation for it, and right now all I'm getting from your image is fantasy orc barbarian. sorry.
