    Chow 179 :: CHOW/IDW CROSSOVER :: 2706 AD Jousting

    ROUND #179 :: CHOW/IDW CROSSOVER :: 2706 AD JOUSTING

    DESCRIPTION

    CHOW/IDW CROSSOVER!

    2706 AD Jousting

    The year is 2706 AD and the most popular sport in the solar system (and near by extra-solar outposts) is a bizarre revived form of jousting. The rules? Participants ride STEEDs, an invention of Hastilidium Inc, to mimic (and improve) horseback riding in zero and near-zero gravity. They later created the 'earthSTEED' that could be adjusted to any planetary body's gravity, but the zero-gravity version of the game is still the most popular one. On the back of their STEEDs they ride across a long narrow strip called the 'plane' which can be any surface, or indeed no surface at all, as long as the borders and middle line are clearly marked. They ride towards each other with lances (newly redesigned for maximum efficiency and awesome-looking-ness) and attempt to knock one another off their STEEDs. Injuries are uncommon, but do happen.

    Participating in the games is very expensive but the pay off is often much greater than the investment. Jousters are the most famous faces in the solar system, more recognizable than politicians or any other form of entertainment, and often make a side-income by doing advertisements or lobbying for particular candidates for government. Jousters have even been known to join government themselves, and are often very successful, whether or not they are actually any good at their job.

    Usually Jousters are either individuals with large fortunes or that come from rich families, or charismatic and talented young people that are 'sponsored' by a corporation. Every entrant wears a 'shield', complete with heraldry, and it is here that the sponsoring companies incorporate their logos in order to advertise. (Only one company per jouster.)

    CHOW REQUIREMENTS.

    - Design a Jouster, including armour and heraldry
    - You may, but are not require, to design the Lance and the STEED

    IDW REQUIREMENTS
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...02#post2507202

    - Design the STEED and the Lance for a particular participant
    - you may also include the Jouster

    NOTE

    As you can see by the requirements, as long as you include the jouster, heraldry, STEED and Lance, you may submit one image to both contests.

    Thanks for the links, daestwen. I'll let the imagery stew a bit and see what I can come up with.

    Just sketching my initial thoughts after reading the brief. Kind of going for a Guilded-aged-esque space suite, with a mechanical, robotic arm the controls the lance. Whipped up the Steed as well, but it's all going to change

    Alright folks, I have decided that I need some training massively in the field of characters and human form. So here i am. I focused on the knight himself to start with, and came up with this concept. Im working with a nano-synthetic alloy futuristic sounding suit that reacts to the bodies muscles and electric impulses, and reacts by giving the one wearing it increased strength, stamina, and reaction time. This version is armored for battle use in the jousting ring.

    The Knights Templar

    Meet Lancerah. From the distant moon X735-C the 72nd human colony. She made it into the semi finals this year and is a favourite to win. No one knows what she has been doing for the past 12 solar cycles but we are all very enthusiastic to see her joust.

    Some really cool ideas so far. Particularly love what zweiDee and Wiggers have posted.

    I was thinking initially of European based armor because of jousting's history, but then it occurred to me that this would be a far future international competition. So armor styles could be based on the contestant's nationality.ancestry. So that opens up Japanese samurai, Aztec/Toltec style armor, Egyptian, Greek... anything really.

    But in the end I am going to try and develop one based on my own German heritage and the whole "black knight" legend. Here's a quickie...

    EDIT: And I think I've found the perfect sponsor!

    Guys I feel like i have to point something out...

    When was the last time a company existed for 700 years...? Without changing it's logo...?

    Also if a company has more than one jouster (and they probably do) they can't use the same shield, each crest has to be different. So they would incorporate the logo, but it wouldn't be *just* the logo.

    No worries for me there since "Bitterbrau Beer" isn't real. It's a company that uh... brews beer from landfill left over from those irresponsible folks of the 21st century. And it was founded in 2606.

    sketchin' some more. I knocked down the protectiveness armor a bit, still opting for glass visor helmet. I'm also thinking of making the tip of the joust (and the shield) energy based. I'm going to do a bunch of thumbnails tonight. This character design can go in so many different ways.
