    manga/anime style(?)

some group character sketches i did that i call 'Lex Aeterna' just cuz it sounds cool. they are positioned in that "cliche" style found in those anime/manga stuff.

Wow! you've got a great start here, for sure! I feel awkward trying to critique someone who is further along skill-wise than I am, though. You have already determined you need to work on your anatomy and have begun doing so. Not much else that I can point out.

Keep working on your proportions. It's good that you're starting to work on your anatomy, keep up with that.

    I'll be watchin'.

anatomy + mr. rapoza inspired 'zombie'

so the first drawing is just something i sketched up after i was watching dave rapoza's livestream last week. here's the link to his sketchbook: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67096

the rest are just some anatomy studies i tried conjuring up from my head.

i believe one of the anatomical studies i referred to Chordate's sketchbook:

    big boss + more anatomy

so this is just a WIP portrait of big boss from his upcoming peace walker appearance. i take forever to render things in photoshop, but the more practice, the better. i'm referring to a picture for the portrait.

also a few anatomy practices i did this morning. i have a problem with drawing things straight, they always come out tilted! any tips on that? hahaha, not that it's a big problem, but it annoys me that i can't draw things aligned most of the time.

bb peacewalker gif process + group image

so here's a .gif process of big boss i did in photoshop, as well as the final turnout. i didn't bother going into further rendering since it was just meant for practicing in photoshop. please be patient for the .gif to load, i think it's .2 sec intervals between each jump .

also, a group picture sketch of made up characters the guy on the top with the crossbow and the chops, is actually a character from my first post, can u find him?

    Amazing progress!

Keep doing what you're doing, you'll get there.

As for tilts, try using a mirror while you draw. Kind of like how when you use photoshop, you tend to flip the image horizontally from time to time to make sure you're drawing things in proportion.

    photoshop gif process+random sketch

alright just updating real quick before i go to work. this is just the .gif process and final product of a 'quick' photostudy i did as well with some random sketch of a warrior (?)

for the photostudy, i didn't bother rendering all the way, that would take me forever, plus it was just a study so i'm not too worried about it being 'perfect'. there were many changes in the positioning of the eyes and mouth, gaaahhh! it was a pain anyways, enjoy.

    Keep working at it.

When you're doing studies, block in the planes of the head. You can block in the shadows and highlights as solid and then go onto smoothing it out once everything is in place. Also, remember that highlights are sharper and shadows are softer.

    anatomy+'fighting' pose(s)+random shaman??

@Enydimon: thanks alot buddy! yeah i normally don't block in the planes on the face when i work on photoshop, i'm still fairly new at it, but that is probably key to the whole portraiture thing. alright will do!!

zomg... so I did a few anatomy practices today while I was sitting in art history class learning about roman art and almost dozed off until I pulled out the sketchbook rofl. anyways, I decided I'm going to start tearing out these sketches out of my sketch book and scan, that way it's easier, i'll just keep them in a binder instead after i rip them out, but here they are.

    more loomis studies

last study for today. uggghhh~ still drawing tilted lol, *free transforms in photoshop*

on a more serious note... i think i'm getting the hang of proportions, not spot-on but slightly improving. just curious, but if anyone studied/is studying Drawing For All Its Worth, how do u approach it? do you actually read the text and copy the drawings? or just copy the drawings? I find myself reading portions of it, observing the illustrations and drawing what i remember from the page without looking. also thinking about the anatomy of course! though i have tendencies to keep glancing at the pages while drawing... ;P

Read and copy. It can be a pain if you don't like the writing style, but at least try to understand why you're drawing what you are and why it works. Sometimes when you read it when you're copying out the book, some things click better. Remember, you got to do more than just drawing what you see, you gotta understand it.

    crap study UGGGHHH

wow... for some reason I really couldn't focus on this, I mean I understood the anatomy and way of understanding the head, but when it came to drawing the thumbs. it was difficult for some reason.

I seriously can't draw small thumbs of heads. Next study on heads, will be the same but on a bigger scale... right now these heads feel "squished" haha xD ...

wow this is one of the slowest loading sketchbooks ive ever visited lol.. Yo teapo i think the head on alot of ur figures looks small in comparison to the body, i think theyre fine height-wise but with big shoulders it makes their heads look smaller

    more heads!

@Jesus Food: haha thank you very much mr. Jesus Food. yeah I notice I don't really match the proportion of the head with the rest of the body, which throws off some viewers. anyways, my page loads pretty quick for me, but I think the slowness is due to the .gif images.

@blexano: yeah keeping a sketchbook here on CA really helps for feed back and stuff. beat em' up crimson daggers style !! i'll be watching your sketchbook buddy!

okay so here is another study of loomis heads for establishing the 'middle' line. I think it's quite obvious I need more work on it, but then again I also need practice on my tablet more, especially approaching these technical studies.
