    Hi Matt,

What an amazing sketchbook you have. I like your use of color, and your compositions are just beautifull. It gives me that certain comfortable feeling when I look at your images.

I thank you for posting you wips and your vimeo channel, since i`m a beginner on digital arts. It is very resourcefull to look at what steps you take when creating a painting. This will apply on traditional stuff as well. Thanks!!!!!

If you are proud of what you did yesterday,
    you haven`t done today

Hey Matt, i havent been here for a while.
That study is rock solid, i've a question for you.
To be honest i wanted to ask this long time ago, but just forgot to do so.
Do you own a cintiq perhaps? Your digital drawings are so accurate that it made me wonder. If yes could you tell me abit how it is to work on it vs intuos, and is it worth it's price.

Thanks and yes, better late than never wish you all the best in the new year!

    Thanks, guys!

    -------
Icecold: Yes, I do have a cintiq. I don't like to mention it often, because people often assume that expensive tools improve artists' abilties. I do think that the cintiq improves my accuracy which is most valuable in linework. Also i know that its large screen area allows me to make large and expressive strokes, which also leads to confident linework.

Does this mean a cintiq is required to do my paintings? no way. If I did not have one, i would do my linework on paper and scan it in. Painting is not as hampered by a USB tablet, only the lineart.

Is it worth the price? absolutely yes. I paid $2000 for mine nearly two years ago, and it is maybe the best purchase i've ever made in my life. I find that the posture I use while drawing is improved and I enjoy it more as a result. Also, using a disposable screen protector allows me to be very heavy handed without damaging the unit.

so if you're serious about digital painting and have the means to do so, i would recommend getting the large cintiq. It's certainly not required, but i love using it for many hours everyday.

    --------

And now for some overdue updates:

some paintings i made for family members (Christmas presents)

    face practice:

and some bloodbowl fanart. i thought it would be funny to do a pose like a youth football player on photo day.

    Simply beautiful and amazing work.
I really admire your very expressive, loose and lively linework/brushstrokes, especially in your face-studies. It gives them an animated and lifelike expression that is just gorgeous.

Just wanted to ask... did this style of using bold lines and strokes just evolved with growing confidence or did you specifically practice it?
I personally have a hard time trying to loosen up my lines, to create such quick and loose impressions of faces/objects etc, and end up fiddling with details, and overworking them. Just wanted to know how others approach this subject, or how they have dealt with it - if they suffered from it.

Thank you for response, well i'm 100% serious about digital painting.
Self training hard to become ca/ilustrator. So i guess cintiq's going to be on my future purchase list.

Wow your paintings are absolutely stunning! I love the colors and lighting! And you do a great job of painting really tight!
I think you need to do more studies of female anatomy though, they are feeling stiff to me atm - and need more of the muscle and subtle fats that make a female curvy and pleasing to the eye. hope that makes sense???

Very inspirational work, dude. I'm super impressed (seeing stuff I didn't know photoshop was capable of!). Awesome sketchbook, please keep updating. In reading through your thread, saw the part on Cintiq - I ordered one a while ago (before the snow) and I've been waiting on it. Nice to hear that it's worth the investment.

I may be heading down to GA for another assignment here in about 5 months - I've been looking at SCAD enviously, but I'll be working there, so prolly not much time for school.

Thanks for the psot - I'm seriously studying on my own and learnin new stuff in order to get a job as an Illustrator or Concept Artist when I get out of the Army (not sure when yet) - so it's awesome to see stuff like this thread. It keeps me inspired and makes me daydream about putting together portfolios, studying color theory, blah blah blah.

    Take care, bro.

Hey man don't think I've stopped in here before. You've got a great sketchbook going! I really dig how loose those digital face studies are. Definitely just keep doing what you're doing man!
