You look at me once. You look at me twice. You look at me again and there's a gonna be a fight! Well let's rock this town, rock it inside out.

Ah. Is it ever OK to show only down to the waist? It's just I have sort of a specific composition, and I don't want to lengthen the image unless I absolutely have to. Not goin to complain if rules is rules though, a little extra work won't kill me.

Anyway...LeoListens: I love both those designs! I think they're faithful to the source but still original. Frankenstein's left eye looks a bit wonky to me though. The way that part of his face juts out makes it seem two dimensional compared to the rest of his head, I think. Hope that makes sense.

It's a character challenge so we need to see the majority of your design. The premise being that if your creation was to be taken further by another artist in the creative pipeline, the information would be there in your image. We have a degree of flexibility, but cutting it off at the waist is going to lose you a place in the final poll I'm affraid.

    WIP/Final?

Don't know if I should leave it like this or change something. Suggestions are very welcome!

Oh by the way, is the latex reading well, or did I fail at rendering it?

Well it kind of looks like vinyl to me, but I can't draw either one, so don't let me freak you out.

Badassm, This is a great portfolio piece, I was eliminated for the 3/4 on my first chow, You have time to add to this, it's just pants and a skirt, come on just add on to the canvas, this is a great piece.

Hey guys! I've been watching CHOW for awhile now but this is my first time participating. I couldn't resist the challenge I chose to re-design the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is what I have so far. Let me know what you think! I'll be inking tonight!

This is probably the last update before completion. Thanks to those who offered advice, and to everyone for their renditions. Such awesome art present.

Decided to go with stylized monsters.

    Dracula:
    Attachment 822124

Hopefully that's not too dark. I think I'll do some designs for the Wolfman and Frank too.

I'll try to get some crits up tomorrow!

    In need of some crits

    Hey peeps. Some nice entries.

I'd really appreciate some crits on this one. Trying to apply some of the lessons learned from the portfolio reviews so lemme know what you think:

    some quick crits...

Badassm: great faces. only thing that stands out, the lighting is a lil confusing. franky has a strong light under his face that doesn't seem to be represented on the bride or their clothes.

Formic Acid: latex on the hands are looking good. boots kinda look like they're glowing. try keeping your highlights running vertically, or sitting on top of a fold. (and under it, but that should be more subtle)

R a n d i s: love the shark spin. but remember chow are friends, not food.

...and some update love. dunno about the green skin and dark dress, kinda starting to look like the wicked witch of the west. will keep playing, prob shift her to more blue.
    if it's ugly... it's art.

Consider your composition here, your guy is dead on centre oblique with a large dark area below him. That's half the canvas with nothing going on and his hand leading the eye off the page. How would it look if he was lower on the page, flinging the lid off? Just a thought.
The face itself also seems kind of flat, while the ends of his headpiece seem almost too round and 3D. Consider the shape of the top of his skull as well, at the moment it's kind of small and caught up in his headpiece.

I love the detail, energy and concept though, it's awesome

    CHOW178 Frankie

Just joined this site and trying out my first post, already made a mess of it. This is for the Universal Monsters thread. I know it's not finished and that I have cut out just a piece from the whole image, but I dont think I will get it finished in time. I am really enjoying this site and just wanted to give a little something back.

Here's my update. From my earlier sketches, I really wanted to paint Dracula, was such a good opportunity too but as I progressed and seeing as how so few chose the Phantom, I decided to give him some more love In a rush right now, I hope I can post crits as well but from the turnout for this chow, lots of great stuff going on already!

    Here's a small update.

I wanted to upload something now because Photoshop crashed 10 minutes ago and was displaying an all black image with no layers. This scared me to death, so I needed to get something out onto the web for my own peace of mind.

LORD M: Thanks alot for your advice I gave the legs a little bit extra strength but may still beef them up a little more later.

I'm throwing my lot in this one. My Dracula will be part Vlad, and more corpse-like. He's placed in the period of the colonial witch hunts. I think he'd actually do quite well there. His natural charm, and penchant for inhuman cruelty, would provide him with plenty of victims and alibis. If I can, I'm going to include a victim in the background.

Well, I sort of failed at finishing my entry. I'm such a slacker. Here's what I had so far, in case anyone wanted to see.

@ Missile: Love your bride! I love the raw gruesome-ness (if that is a word -_-)

    Here's my WIP.

Would anybody be able to help me with the readibility of the concept? In other word, does this say "Frankenstein" to you and if not what's missing?

My concept is what would Frankenstein looks if he's in Twilight

Matt: It's a cool character, and i like the pose/energy of this guy

BUT...you have some weird compositional lines which aren't helping focus us on that character. Most of the lines are point - rushing - us away and to the bottom edge. Once we get there (as with the bottom and up top with the hand) there's nothing to swing us back into the piece.

I think you should place a few elements in those corners to redirect the eye. You've kind of done it on the bottom but it's not enough. Something larger in the same space would help. Same for the top...maybe some spider webs or something.

Hope you don't mind the simple paintover.
Red lines show us current direction. Blue ones are the ones i think are needed.
Edit: A idea just occured to me. One the bottom, maybe fill the area with dark foreground silhouettes of other 'servant' mummies. just a thought.

supermichaelman - I am posting this here so as not to clutter up the Final Burning thread, but I think it would behoove you to check the process thread more. The brief was clarified to say the character must stick to the original gender from the Universal films.

Sorry for the spam. Tried to resolve the composition issues. Kind of happy with it so, barring any huge problems, I'll likely pick up the details and then stick a fork in it:
