pandawhipped's jolly sketchbook (update nov 11)
so about...what 4 or 5 years ago i had a crazy long thread full of drawings i did at watts atelier. then i fell off the face of the earth.
now im in japan. nice.
i was looking around a few weeks ago, got crazy inspired and pulled out the ol' sketchbook and went to town. haven't been able to stop since. not quite the same stuff i was doing back then...wish i still had that stuff to look at sometimes. its all gone in the farthest depths of the internet.
anyway here's a HUGE dump. i promise to post more often than once every five years. and the updates also wont be as long.

I think I remember your Watts Atelier thread.... this stuff is great! Is the red a prismacolour pencil or crayon? Your control of the old brushpen is spot on too.

whipped up a drawing to cheer up a friend
bartovan: thanks i wish i had picked one up sooner. they always kinda scared me. but ive decided to take one sketchbook and just go for it, no under drawings
colorexcursion: thanks! i hear a lot about my "style" lately, but i still dont feel like i have one. im still looking for my voice...but maybe that feeling will never go away, no matter how much my own style develops.
donalfall: really? that was back in 03, right around when you joined, so maybe. it went up to like 15 pages or so, but all the drawings are gone now. total bummer. the red color pencil is some cheapy made by mitsubishi. i havent found any prismacolors out here, but im sure they exist. everything in japan costs 7,000 times as much as it did back home so its always a stressful time buying art muck.

I always thought Art supplies cost less in japan.

depends on what youre buying. for example pilot high tech c pens are definitely cheaper here, but as far as i can remember the only place you can find them in america is japanese stationary stores. you can get plenty of junk art supplies at the 100 yen shop...but they really are garbage. i get lots of sketchbooks for doodling from there, but a nice moleskin will run you about 30 american dollars, or twice the price

The character and portrait drawings ooze with personality. Great sketchbook.
November 14th, 2009 #16
Yeah, I guess it just depends, because a lot of the art supplies I get are from Japan like pens, screentone and copic markers. I know the copics here are about $6.00 per marker.

I feel the same way. I don't know if anyone can really see their own style
