Never, NEVER say things like this before a product has launched.

This thing DOES look rather sweet... I'll wait a couple generations until they stop overheating and maybe get one

Looks pretty cool. I'm sure I could think up enough excuses for it to be practical in my life. Reminds of that book that Penny and Brain had in Inspector Gadget

    Cool!

… if you're a 19 year old girl with ambitions to become a fashion designer or work at ELLE.

Fashion design is also creative, or you don't think so?. The preview vids show those type of jobs, but I just imagine them to be applied to concept art/illustration. The creative process is quite similar for most of us creative professions: Client sends you the job - you research - you sketch - you make notes - the client makes notes on your sketches - you correct the sketches - client approves - you download the sketches to your normal work computer and start working on the final versions. If the device turns out to work like the vids show, then it's a pretty useful tool.

seems rather small and fragile to me. i don't see why i would rather have this instead of a regular tablet PC or even a paper sketchbook. personally, if i'm going to spend a lot of money (counting the taxes when getting into my country) i want the product to do a lot, not just be a pretty agenda

These are just concept videos and images.

Just wait till mac releases their tablet that has been in production for sometime now. They haven't said a release date yet or shown any details of it. But it will most likely blow Microsoft out of the water like usual.

Yea, I bet it'll be nicely designed. Sadly... it will still be a mac.

The apple tablet doesn't seem to use a stylus, so I'm not sure what the point would be for artists. I don't think I'd enjoy finger painting on a giant iphone.

GriNGo: That was a joke. Well actually it wasn't, but from the look of it, the Courier is aimed at a consumer audience rather than a professional one (the video shows that it's all about the job, but I tell you that this video is 90% – rather good, on a Microsoft scale – marketing and 10% product insight.)

My prediction: Until the Courier comes out, the thing will be stripped down to the point where you can only do the three things that it's meant to be used for and nothing more – in order to get the price down to where the (admittedly rather trollishly set up by me) aspiring fashion designer can afford it. It will be a digital calendar with mediocre media capabilities.

Let's hope I'm wrong and I'll gladly buy it when the price is the same as a calculator (unless the said Apple tablet will be on the market, of course.)

    Thumbs up

This fucking shit definitely looks way sexier than even the PS3 Slim! WOW! If I were a critic, I would give rave reviews for this!

On the other hand, on the more rational side, while it looks sexier than porn, it seems to be overloaded with too many features that might distract one from drawing.

If I could choose, Intuos / Wacom for me any day.

MS is famous for overloading stuff with a galaxy of cool but un-needed / seldom used functions. I mean, look at IE. Look at Office. Look at Vista (hopefully, Windows 7 will save the day)

MS also loves to hype up buzzwords like "increase productivity and workflow" whatnot.
The sad truth is, it (probably) won't.

MS havent exactly been world renown for their software lately, let alone hardware

but with those skepticisms aside, i would totally make the shift, the less paper I use in the future the better, and if I could condense years of sketching in this one piece rather than like 5 different (most likely damaged and fading) sketchbooks, that would be sweet also.

Ok, if Google comes up with a digital tablet, I'll buy it.
Google is now what MS used to be (in the early 90s), but better.

Unless there's something I've missed, neither this nor the apple tablet appears to have any pressure sensitivity. Which would mean you're barking up the wrong forest.

Also, from what I know of a recently announced motion tracking piece of technology - you know the one I mean - it would appear they've re-entered the 90s badness of Vaporware or just ridiculously overstating the capabilities of a real product sitll in development. Courier is still just a concept, not a reality.

You'll notice I'm trying to avoid libel here, so I'll state that this is all the opinion of the author only and that you should find out more for yourselves.

    @ Dirty_C

I thought they said on Giz that it was at a working prototype stage? I mean, obviously that's still in development, but it's not exactly "just a concept" either...

Well, there's semantics sure, but the point is that the price point isn't set, the final feature set isn't set, we have zero idea if it's capable of doing what they say it is, yada yada.

They've been releasing stuff to the media lately that doesn't reflect what I've been hearing about people actually trying to use the equipment. I mean, like, not even a little bit.

Pay attention to what they've been up to lately - a lot of timed announcements, more or less trying to interfere with other companies' promotions of available products, while they only have something in development at best.

It's the 90s all over again, folks.

We're actually talking about the unreleased Apple Netbook Tablet which is due out first quarter next year - the Modbook's already out and it's high end laptop. The babies we're talking about are low end netbooks.

The apple one is supposed to basically be a great big iphone. Up to ten inches based on some intercepted order information from hardware suppliers in Taiwan.

It looks like something i could have use for, but i'd hold out buying the MS product until i've seen what apple will deliver. I'd hate to buy a zune only to realize that apple offers ipods.

The main thing for us is to be able to sketch outdoors. DS is just fine for me but you see nothing when you're outside.

I'm with Chup on this one.

Being able to take something outside with me like a folding touch sensitive sketchbook would be killer, i have a small wacom and my laptop, but it's cumbersome and my laptop only has about an hour of battery life. Assuming this thing has at least 3-4 hours of battery life then it would be great for going outside and doing quick and clean sketches and studies. Without pressure sensetivity it would be rather limited in some ways, but still good for doing quick studies and whatnot, at least getting ideas down that you could later go home and import directly into photoshop on your desktop or what.
