Ok. Bang. In we go. Two initial and sadly rather rushed sketches of Summer Ascendant, the peak of his power. In his hand he holds the sun, upon his brow is a crown of cosmic fires. See the serpents writhe in his grip. Know that Summer is here.

    Comments and update:

Thanks to Poshspice and Raoul for the Crit. I did notice that I had the jaw line way too high and I have readjusted it. Wonderful eyes you guys!

Fayth: She is looking great. I think you want to look at her foot again or maybe it's just me. I am not all that good with anatomy but I think it needs a little adjustment. Can't wait to see more!

Dozeren: I am loving the cold kiss of winter. The sheer clothing is a nice touch actually and I like the concept of it being night too. Keep it up!

Donna: She is the warrior of autumn I am really in love with the shoulder pads and feather bottom! Her hair is interesting too!

Brixtah: Prancing amoung the trees is a wonderful concept. I would lighten his skin just a little bit though unless you wanted him to match the trees color.

trOtis: I love the girl and the breeze but I think maybe having some fall colors either on the umbrellas or adding falling leaves would add to the autumn feel as well.

Farlander: Your old man winter is interesting. I can see him heading into a strong blizzard.

D.aligh: Love the sketch. Can't wait to see more from you on this one!

Raoul: I love the skeletal face. If you happen to start over with the same season keep the thin frame and face!

Ruri: Interesting concept. Can't wait to see your next update!

Lt_Action: Seasonal heads sounds really interesting. I would like you to try it out. Love the rabbit by the way!

AsaB: You have captured the retro animation feel really well. Can't wait to see more from you.

Okay so I got off of work at 4 this morning and I am about to psot my update at 5. (looking at everyones updates) So I did some more work on him yesturday and I decided to form him out of a pile of petals on the ground. Weird I know! I am still playing around with this one. If I get stuck I may scrap him and redraw my season of spring. Still working on him though. Since I am off tonight I will put more effort into him and come up with a background of some sort!

Self Crit: I know I need to work on proportion some more and his hands!

Sorry about the lack of crits so far. Thanks to the folks who took the time to comment - I've taken some of the advice on board (or tried to, at least).

I dropped the dress because it wasn't quite the style I was going for. Turned the concept of the hair into the outfit itself - a sort of network of dead tree branches. I was aiming to have everything look chilly and bright but then I figured winter isn't bright, it's quite grim and dark... so a dark outfit it is. The bleeding withered apple probably seems a little autumnal but it's meant as a symbol of winter gripping nature and choking the life out of it.

So much left to do on both of these! But I'm happy with them so far. Any crits most welcome, I tried to get rid of the flatness in winter's background.

    No comments this time, sorry.

I gotta run, I'm going to the cinema xD Anyways, I took it as far as I wanted. Okay...that not true. I could go on and on rendering and fine tuning, but I gotta stop at some point right? I think it looks more like autumn now....right? I'm gonna add the colors tomorrow. I hope I don't mess up!

    Awesome the 4 seasons

I love this topic. However what my mind is coming up with seems inappropriate for chow. Still I decided I'd do it as a point of exercise. I can crit to save my life so I'll be lurking.

Got in a little late on this one but I did some sketches last night. I think I'm gonna go super ambitious and try to get all 4 seasons into one sketch...

Didn't have time to look through everyone's but it looks like there's some very cool ideas here.

    One comment:
Wildcat Take another look at that kimono. Leaving out that you have a guy in a kimono, (which really only happens in kabuki) there's some major errors with the design. Mostly in the sleeves. Kimono sleeves have a cut at the elbow and a square of fabric hanging down from the forearm; they're not a single long piece of fabric like western dagger sleeves. I would decide if you want a guy in a formal kimono, or else look at pictures of men's yukata, which is a lighter summer "kimono".

Also, his waist seems awfully narrow after those beefy shoulders. I'd fill him out a bit; give him an actual waist. I know you're going for a sort of shojo manga style where everyone is long and gangly, but don't thin him out too much.

Let me try to give some useful crits :

buffichar - lovely sketches, what's the idea behind the clothing designs?
LostFayth - fellow Dutchie! Nice lighting, I would use reference for the folds in the dress, it's really hard to draw.
Smuze - Mucha-like! Nice skintones, put some attention in the dresses and they're beautiful!
kovah - cool design and good colours, try to use reference for the bird and hands to make it even better!
Missile - Very nice design, though it does not instantly make me think of winter. Then again, I like how you take a more original approach. Her neck seems a little off because of the shadows I think, you might want to tweak that.
wildcat - Manga style! Like you said, watch the proportions and use reference if you're not sure how to draw the hands.
master.mind - already a nice atmosphere. I'd like to see the next step!
    Mordus - Original design!

Here's an update on my seasons, I enjoyed the painting so much I made all four of them. still some proportional and anatomy issues though. I'd love to get some c&c!

arthemis - perhaps use the colour sheme of summer on spring...i think spring itself is too "cool" right now. and go more into the yellows with summer even.
also, the figure on winter is kinda boring.
    otherwise really good.

    edit:
    slowly progressing...
    c&c welcome.

Some more update from today. Worked more on refining the stylized wind (the swirly thing), put a forrest in. Next is to flesh out my winter queen. And figure out how to make the ice hair. I want it to be more abstract form of ice than realistic looking icicles.

Just throwing in my progress on Spring. Going for a really stylized ink with a limited palette. I'm hoping to make more seasons!

Some WIP. Please let me know if I f*d up in some way or it will be to late to change it. Seriously, any feedback is greatly appreciated. It's autumn btw, in case that isn't clear This is fun. Maybe this time I'll actually finish the piece.

    shogo - nice lighting!
monsieur - the green of the background is quite overpowering, maybe go for a darker shade. since i don't know how light the foreground figures are gonna be,it's hard to crit at this point. in any case, establish a lightsource before you go further. (haven't seen anything else from you yet,so i don't know bout your normal modus operandi)

Whoa...Some nice works the way I see it!

Master.Mind,That's great the way it is!Id leave it that way,and hang it on my wall!

Monsieur,Really ArtNoveau,I'd like to see it finished

Donnche. I don't like what u've done to her now,I think the prev version was much better, only if u used a bit tighter contour...You'll see what i mean, but keep up!

As for me,I don't think I'll manage to get it done on time, school's killin' me,am lazy and not gonna be home for this weekend...So,just minor updates...Too bad...And yes,I know the hat's wrong, and that the belly button should be a bit more inwards.

Monsieur Very cool subject- fits perfectly with autumn and communicates a great mood. looking forward to it!

    Shogo
nice colours and strokes.. i think if you cut the "skirt" of mr. winter a bit shorter, the composition will work better. Try also to add some of that greenish blue (boys coat) to the old mans cloak, now the two characters seem a bit separated.. i hope this makes sense to you

Thanks a lot Jabo, Gerezon and Daestwen for the encouragement!! I've been a bit low on motivation lately, so I'm forcing myself to do this one...

some comments on some of those who last posted (can't comment on everybody)...
TheFarlander, I completely love your sketches...
Auspiciouspanda, I like the lighting a lot, and the way he's freezing the leaves and making them fall...
portbar, it will open probably around sunday, but if you post your wip here before you might get some useful feedback!
kovah, I like the colors in yours, maybe the legs are a bit short but I like them nonetheless...
Smuze, its looking great, I'm loving summer... in winter, maybe the flat straight skirt is the weakest point, imho...
LostFayth, it reminds me of snowwhite with all the animals, hehe, looking forward to colors...
buffichar, why so small! hehe... im wondering why would it be unappropiate for chow...
Arthemis, that's impressive, and you say that's a quicker way? just curiosity, how long did it took you to do each one of those? I think that summer is my favourite one...
    AsaB, I love it!

here's (at last) an update on mine, I started with summer and winter, I might leave the kids (spring and autumn) for the end, as something optional if I have the time... I was having some difficulties with the woman's face, her jaw still seems too big, but maybe it doesn't look that bad... and I like the kid's face but probably it doesnt match the rest of the group style...

    Wheee, 3vil is here!

Sorry everyone, this is going to be a quick drop-and-run because I've gotten sick My throat is KILLING me, it's not even funny. Here's the Autumn lady, powered by several Chiu-streams. Not sure what I want to do with bits of her design, like head and hair and those arms are so not going to fly. The background went AWOL until I come up with something better. Now, sleeeeeeeeeeep.

mastermind: I like the earthy tones Are you trying to take in the sadder mood of autumn in your piece? Because otherwise you need to bring in some more orange and yellow. Nice start

Missile: Hey, i like the idea of the apple. Maybe she should tighten her grip around the apple, to enstrengthen your concept. What is she wearing around her neck?

Kovah: Nice colors. Try to desaturate the background more maybe. This way the character will stick out more

    Smuze: No comments, really good!

Arthemis: I like your seasons You have good compositions in every one of them. You've adressed the anatomy problems yourself already. The autumn guy has too short legs for example. I also think the green of your springlady is a bit too cold for my taste, but maybe that's your interpretation of spring

Shogo: Great atmosphere!! You could bring out the old man better. Maybe lighten his skin?

    Here's my WIP

Finally sat down and did a few crits. Everyone's pics are comin along! It'll be fun to see the finished works.

Saleem - Looking good! I like the armour especially. Just one thing though, if the white cloud by his face is his breath then it's blowing in a different direction than his hair.

Shogo - Wonderful atmosphere and colours. My only crit would be the trees, the size makes them look like they should be far away, but they're so dark that it's bringing them forward again. If you make them a bit paler it'd give them a bit of a push back.

Monsieur - Loving the colours, the deer's neck and head look a bit too big for its body though. Awesome composition.

Lauren R - Lovely composition, and I'm diggin her outfit and the simplicity. Like Carnifex said though you should double-check your hands.

Dozeren - I like where it's going! I think you could do a bit more with the drapery though, and the forest is pretty but so small that I didn't see it till I read that it was there. I like the swirlies and the colour palette lots!

Carnifex - The texture on that hood is fantastic! LOVE the colours in this (especially the amazing pink boots, which I will now lust after.) Maybe you could have some hint of trees closer to the foreground? It could frame her nicely imo.

Arthemis - All beautiful paintings! My favourite is definitely spring, the shape of the branch going across is great. Winter looks a little tucked off to the side though, my eye keeps getting pulled to the empty space in the sky.
