20th annivarsary of 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake

Today at 5:04pm will be the 20 year annivarsary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, it was my first earthquake when I was 8 years old. My pet birds died from the shock but other then that, family and the house ended up alright. I'm sure it will be all over the news today, at least locally here but anyway here's footage I found (wow the news casters look so young compared to today).

I was living in Oakland at the time, not far from the 880 Cypress that collapsed. I watched the rescue workers trying to save all those people trapped beneath it, dragging away bodies. Scary times.

That afternoon was the most terrifying episode of Duck Tales ever. Seriously.

I remember, first the TV hutch fell over, then after starring at the glass coffee table for half a second in terror, I ran towards the kitchen, only to find all the dishes launching out of the cabinets and crashing onto the floor. By the time I made it to the backyard, the pool was already half empty and my dogs were basically swimming around on the patio. Crazy, crazy, day - plus aftershocks.

I recall reading somewhere, that if the same thing where to happen again right now, half the marina would just sink right into the bay. Since landfills are so prone to Liquefaction. Lets hope that doesn't go down for another couple decades at least.
