Fantasy art portfolio
I want to show you our ne fantasy art portfolio. My wife and me created it during the last two moth. It´s our first step as freelance illustrators and we hope to get some clients on the german book fair next week. I hope you like our images.

Some of them I like a lot, others not as much. Most of them could use some improvement (i.e., the way the skin is rendered looks too soft/smooth in some way, and the eyebrow/nostril on the knight need fixing). I think the sea creatures are my favorite. Thanks for posting these.
btw, I was the Chief Ferret in our high school play of Toad of Toad Hall.

Hi Guys, it all looks too smooth, you need a bit of light and shade with your brush strokes. Watch the hands they are the hardest things to draw.

the first guy has a bad haircut ,too "modern" like he's out of the hair saloon.
there 's a problem with his right eye and nose.
it's obvious you have used photo parts (lady with the hawk) so you need more overpaint on those parts.
some of your pictures looks completely flat like the wizard and the 3 goblins images:
I mean ,there's no depth in it even if you put rim lights ,still look 2D.
this effect is not appearing in your marine creatures...?
it all shows that you have put a lot of work into your images ,you just have to change the way you paint,for exemple you are doing too many details and less primary shaping and shadowing .
to fix that ,learn values ;painting "nature morte" with objects on a table with one light source.
keep it up.

Thank you for your replies... I see alll the problems you described, specially the one with the flat shading. We really have to work on these. MoonChilD: Thank you for your time and the many critics. The marine creatures are zbrush renders, so the shadows were "built-in". Maybe we have to look stronger at the cast shadows. The hawk lady doesn´t have any photo parts. We had a woman from a costume shop as reference, but the layer with the photos was deleted in the end. But it doesnt solve he problem in the end. We´ll try your suggesstion with the studies on the table. Sounds helpful

Very strong works, I particularly enjoy your sharper work a bit more. In fact I'd say you work better this way; It seems you relied a bit too heavily on the airbrush on some of your weaker pieces, which can make skin look a bit too plastic or deceased. Solid work overall however; Colors and lighting effects are particularly impressive.

i see how to fix things:
on the images i was talking about ,i guess you are painting like a drawing ,so it's really "flat"looking,then you probably add the lighted parts on top of it...
when you should paint allready with the values at the very start of the painting...like it's 3d ,just choose an imaginary light source and shade your basic paint according to it...then add details ,rim lights ,renderings and all...
and studies with objects with different and simple forms(square,ball so on)will definitely help to catch it.

It´s very kind of you taking so much time to help us. I´ll make some new illustrations next week and I´ll another workflow with then.
