I think they are giving away because he´s the first black president. And the guys can make history. But well, they give the same prize to Henry Kissinger...

"We hereby award this Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama for not being George W. Bush."

Heh. Seems like they could have waited to the end of his first year, at least.

Probably because Norway want to strengthen their international presence. Considering no currently elected president ever sat foot in Norway, it's a nice lure.

It's a bit weird. I like Obama but.. Yeah.

Possibly worth mentioning that the leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committe is also the
Secretary-General of the Council of Europe. And, a socialist!

    Ees a conspiracy!

Alright, listen. President Barack Obama is THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. Remember what this race has gone through to make America what it is now. Remember how often we sought peace and resolution rather than conflict through Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. There has been a great many peoples who have suffered the same if not worse indignities throughout history, the Jews and native Africans being an example.

He has showed what can be accomplished if we all work together and get past our inbred stereotypes. We often take what our parents and elders believe to be right and continue the strain. But with President Barack Obama, he has shown that being progressive and seeking to improve on the relations that divide the world as a whole, nothing is without reach. Sure, some of his methods and ideas are ecstatic, but they just may well work. He is trying to run the biggest world super power in terms of military strength and economy (the latter being hotly debated) in a short matter of time to make sure it has a lasting effect.

Don't think that he is being given everything, he has worked very hard to earn it. Think of this presentation as something correlated to the art community. If James Jean or even Marko won something this prestigious, would you still be making such remarks?

    This statement confuses me.

It is waaaaay too early to say that Obama has had an extremely positive impact on the world's stage. In several years we shall see if he has earned this accolade.

The deadline for Nobel nominees is Feb 1, which means he had been in office a grand total of 11 days. Nobel is shite after Yassar Arafat got it, anyway .

Probably going to be an awkward meeting in the Afghanistan war room today. lol.

"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself," ElBaradei said. "He has shown an unshakable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts."
After so many years of Bush's blundering, Obama has in a very short amount of time been able to bring a since of hope, peace and the real possibility of reestablishing World harmony. He actually started working on this before he was elected if anyone remembers.

They did a poll in our news papers (CT) and 60% of the people disagree with me actually. I have my rights to say what I want thankfully, hahahahaha!!! Obama is the BOMB or maybe he'll be the anti-bomb!
From what I read Obama also disagrees with getting this prize. I think it's great to show a little pre-mature good faith, the World needs more hope for World peace.

That same 50% has a tendency to point out that Obama's middle name is Hussein, as if they think that he was named after Saddam or that he's likely to repeat any of the guy's more heinous actions. It's about as unfair of a comparison as the idiots that thought Bush was anything like Hitler.

To keep things on topic, I also think it feels a bit early in Obama's presidency to be giving him a nobel peace prize.

I don't have anything against Obama, I'm actually very happy that he won, but I agree with those who say it might be a littlle early to cover him in awards and such. I think it undermines the value of the award when people think it's a joke, and it would have been better for him to have gotten it later in his career, as well as better for the Nobel comitee.
Regarding the fact that he his black and he is in a historically significant position. Well, it's historical for the country, not for him, it's not like he decided to be black. It would be like giving someone an award because they are female or blond, or tall. I know that he might have fought an uphill baattle in some places because of the color of his skin, but I don't think a prize can be deserved just because he is the first "insert title" from "insert minority group."

He's probably shocked as well, but he's a good man.
Though i do agree that he got it a little too early in his career, it's not his fault, it's the Nobel commitee judges (or whoever) that chose him. @__@

Obama IS surprised: NYT: Obama Says He’s ‘Surprised’ and ‘Humbled’ by Nobel Prize <--good article - give it a read.

After 8-years where our foreign policy and idea of diplomacy was through invading sovereign nations and via the barrel of a gun and an administration basically TRASHED not only this country (the USA) and international efforts of diplomacy, what Obama has done in 8-short months of office is quite a feat.

The Nobel is about awarding the effort and this is a recognition of not only Obama's efforts but a genuine recognition that America is moving away from "rogue nation" and back into the white hat of the "good guys". So yes, I'm happy and surprised. And proud. There is much more that needs to be done (*cough* Afghanistan *cough* ), but let's hope that this award will embolden our President into a direction of diplomacy there.

And let's face it, the ringers are going ape shit over this. After the US' loss of the Olympics and now this, I betcha (or one could hope), that their heads will all go *POP* over this. Let's face it, Hitler never won the Nobel, so their constant comparisons of Obama to Hitler has been thrown a serious wrench. hehehe

Obama's a likable guy, sure. And, it's supar fucking awesome that he's the first black prezzy. But, he just gave a bunch of money - that doesn't even exist in the first place - to failing businesses instead of giving it to, oh, let's say actual important things. That just doesn't say "Peace Prize" to me.
