    Happy Birthday, Astérix...

    I know it's probably not world-shattering news, but...hey, I'm a comic freak...

Astérix will be 50 years old on October 29, 2009. The cartoon series was created by writer René Goscinny and artist Albert Uderzo (Uderzo took over both duties when his partner died in 1977), and is one of the most popular and consistently well-done comic series in history, even though it's not all that well-known within the United States. Our loss...we have no taste, obviously...

As for official recognition of what most ignorant adults consider a child's comic...

Some of the comic volumes have been translated into ancient Greek, Latin and Romansch, Frisian, and Limburgish.

The first French satellite was name Astérix-1, after the main character in the series (1965).

There is also an asteroid named 29401 Astérix after the lead character.

    Happy birthday, dudes and dudettes...

50 years already? I didn't realise it was that old. I grew up with this comic and I can safely say I recognise all the characters in that image above (if not by name at least by face).

    Congratulations to Asterix and crew

Lovely comics . I used to read them all the time as a child. The movie adoptions, both animated and live action, never really caught up to the comic books themselves. They are (or used to be) very popular in Germany, less so in Sweden, sadly.

    50 years...quite some time .

    Oh, Astérix and Obélix
I still have so many of their volumes in my collection - I plan to complete it one day. One day..!
It's fortunately quite popular here in Italy, it deserves to be so. Happy birthday!

Grew up with these... Dad collected.

First thing I did was automatically scan the image bg to see where they'd tied up Troubadourix (the singer), but to my almost disappointment he's in the front row for once.

    Happy BD Asterix and Obelix!

Oh, and Thanks! for posting that awesome picture... I wish it was bigger, the details kind of fuzz, but I recognize every face even if I can't remember every name.

Man, it blows my mind that Uderzo is able to replicate so many unique characters, some from so long ago, so precisely... he is an absolute genius at drawing continuity!

Shit. Exactly what I needed... Now I have to read them all again... It comes and goes actually... Right when I say "ok, I now them by heart, I'm full", I catch a glimpse of a forgotten character, or someone mentions an old quote, and it's all over again...

I have all of them in Greek, the editions in Ancient Greek, Cypriot and Cretan dialects, and I have honestly worn them out so much I am currently recollecting them... Some of my favorites I've read so many times they've been reduced to piles of torn pages...

Anyway, to the greatest comic ever to be drawn in Europe. Well, I'd say in the whole world, but maybe that's just me....

..now where did I put Asterix in Spain...

Wow, I love Astérix! My dad has heaps of them, and he used to read these to me when I couldn't really read them myself yet. And then I learned to read and there was no holding back anymore

    Anyway, happy birthday Astérix!
