Spartan Camp #108 - 50 gestures + Optional "Animal Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 11th of October.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Animal Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study: Simple topic! A little variation can be refreshing sometimes. With or without ref. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are also up to you!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

may be the animal study only a portrait? (I'll do full body animal gestures anyway 50 human ones is too frightening, even with eyes and faces and other 'easier to me stuff'. easier? hmm... I drew some faces the other day. I've drawn mostly faces for years now. I'm still so bad at them... maddening...)
shiNIN; Sure! A portrait will be fine. Agreed on those faces- tough. I'll see if I can think of a nice optional for the future. I also think it helps if you add faces to your figures, I tend to leave them blank way too often.

faces to the figures? well I have huge difficulties even adding heads...
I have a head drawing mode and a body drawing mode it seems. one of them suffers and I often mess up the scale too and I have to redraw
some pictures... I will do some full bodies too (I avoid them so much, shame on me), these are from my very tiresome week... I could only almost just copy... and not always well...

my favourite reference. messy lines... then I did some small wonder: I redrew it from my (very bad visual) memory!!! a few minutes on a shaking bus...
Anthis - nice as usual. You seem to use a lot of guidelines. Can you get all that done in 30 seconds, or are they longer studies?
Shinin - I love the storks! And even though you say you avoid the human figure, I think you full figure studies are actually pretty good.
Mindmendermind - Frank Frazetta study is looking nice. There's something strange about the left leg of the leopard. Looks slightly boneless. It might be because the statue thing doesn't give a good idea of the actual structure, I can't tell. Also, I wish you weren't drawing on lined paper

Gotta keep it short because I'm on time constraints! Some great activity around here and some impressive practising. Also - share tips and critique! Bit late myself this week.
shiNIN; Those are my thoughts as well (on a separate method for head/body). It happens with me too, and I think its an indication that you still rely on methods rather than expertise. Nice studies though, the male in b/w is pretty good. I can see you paid attention to soft transitions and hard edges.
Mindbendermind ; Very nice, getting cleaner and more accurate by the day! The hair above her ear is nicely done, it seems like an interesting method. I think your sense of depth and general '3d feel' could improve but I'm not sure how. Perhaps perspective, or the industrial design kind of thing.
Ink Fish; Thanks! I think it's true what you say, I'm already trying to draw more 'freely' rather than constructing everything. I'm not sure what's the best approach, I guess doing both. These are mostly 1-2mins I think.
Some nice studies there. Interestingly, you can always recognize posemaniacs vs photo reference. I think that's good to know because seemingly, posemaniac can be slightly idealized and less spontaneous. You're doing a nice job on these figures, I can see you're also trying out different approaches. With the 'spine line' and some box shapes and such. You could also try and alternate between reference and poses from imagination, which really allows you to compare and put to use what you've just seen.
onemorepirate; Welcome to Conceptart! I can safely say you've come to the right place. Great studies there. I'm getting more and more interested in Vilppu. I'm only using Bridgman at the moment. What's mainly interesting is that those figures are actually quite complex. Few easy poses. But you're pulling them off and they are well readable. I personally find that using thin and clean lines gives you some more control. Using line weight to accentuate form and such. But perhaps a big brush feels better for you? I'd be interested in that.
ggnastist ; Thanks for listing your reference sources! More links are always welcome. Very helpful! Nice approach on those poses, with the rounded shapes. The ones with the contour lines around the legs (top right) are interesting, that seems like a nice practice. Some of those seem fairly smudgy though, or is that the other side of the paper you can see? Either way perhaps something to look into.
