HALO Work: UPDATE 4/24/10 EDGE Magazine cover and more

CA.Org what is happenin with your bad selves?

Its been a while since my last update simply because this is the one of the few images ive gotten clearence for, I have a bunch of goodies coming down the pike soon.
I also wanted to post this one seperately because ive been lucky enough to have some of you very talented guys and gals ask me for WIP shots, which I never have really delivered on for a bunch of different reasons; the main one being is that I only work on 2 layers and the work evolves very quickly, I just cant be bothered to lift my head out of a groove and take a screencap.

Now I dont work in 2 layers because I think im cool, I do it because those 2 fragile little braincells that have been left clinging to the inside of my skull cant handle remembering what layer is for what, even with renaming them; sad but true.

Heres one of 2 comissisions ive just wrapped up for Bungie, who were fantastic. Shit, even James the IT guy rocked.

For this one I had to take WIP shots to shoot back to Bungie so we could hash out the composition, so I got lucky on this one being able to provide some WIP's, I really hope they are of some use to those of you who were curious.

By the way working with them was an amazing experience on many, many levels.
    This contract turned into a B E A ST.
Basically 2 weeks to get the approved composition finished turned into 5 days due to an unforseen twist, which then turned into 4.
In that time frame it even got enlarged into a fold-out sized image. So 11 X 10.25 @ 300dpi, 4 days to do it.
To complicate things the content was all comprised of things which I consider to be my weakest areas of focus: Direct, overhead daylight, vehicles, tech and using photo reference as a guide. Not only that I do stay at home daddy day-care during the day until my fantastic wife gets home, which only leaves me nights and weekends to work.

So yeah, lotta odds stacked against me.
The sick thing is I fed on the pressure, I guess im just a sicky.

I was fortunate enough to find out what my true limits as an artist were via this contract and you really cant get much better than that, I couldnt thank Bungie enough.
Now granted Its not my best work, but im pretty satisfied with it considering the timeframe.

Im grateful for any feedback, questions or critiques anyone has, I really love this place and thanks so very much for inquiring about process shots guys, it means a lot that your interested!

    God bless and best wishes!

Dude, what you consider "not my best work" is still at a level I seriously don't think I'll ever achieve. This is freaking awesome. As always. Just keep on doing what you do and everyone will be happy

Very nice work man !! I saw a few people at the ODST launch party carrying a print of your work around, but was too shy to ask who could've done it. Now i know, and i'm not surprised, kudos !

Very cool! My fav parst are the hot spots on the metal gear: healmets, guns, armour. I wish the passenger was shooting, or showing a muzzle blast--even though in reality it prob wouldn't have a muzzle blast even if he was shooting b/c it looks like his gun has a silencer-anyway. Good Job dude.

You've done a great job there, and doubly good on account of the tight deadline. Great dynamism and the textures are superb as usual.

And coincidentally my ODST arrived a few minutes ago...

what I love about your work is how it looks like a 3d render but at the same time it doesn't.

Thanks for posting this. I originally saw it on bungie.net and I genuinely thought part of it was photo manipulation. By the way, I don't think anyone mentioned the reason for the commission; is it for marketing or just something awesome to show off?
