Do you ever use 3d models to use underneath your environment sketches?

@jdavisillustration- actually I never use 3d because I like to figure out perspective natively, so here is a step by step of one my latest images where I started with custom brushes, however sometimes I start with linedrawing I will post another one later this day.

hey takashmen, yes its been a while. I did lots of painterly exercises if you look closely but what do you mean with photomanipulation? Some of my images use photos to enhance the detail level. James Paick, Feng Zhu and John Park have great Tutorials about that. Photomanipulation or matte painting dont paint over the photos. But I do. So its a big difference. I know one should do lots of painterly studies but you will learn also a lot when you paint over photos. Especially when you do stuff from imagination you will have to look at reference image for believability. Some why not overlay photos as reference. The artistic process is untouched. Its a difference but its similiar. You can see in my last eow entry that color, mood, lighting, composition, perspective, design basics are all painted, no reference used for that, the photos just help read it better. Very detailed images without photos take very long. Sometimes I don have time for that but I love to spend time with it actually.

Anyways here is a new image without photos

My god, I can't even really say how breathtaking the details in your work are. Some of your more sci-fi oriented pieces remind me of Feng Zhu's artwork, they're just so incredibly done.

After all, if someone is allowed to praise and compliment my work, and tell me how much they love the way I did ___, or ___ then why should I ever deny someone else the right to tell me that my work is awful, that I need to grasp the basics of anatomy/composition/originality/etc, and that I have FAR more to improve on?"
