nathan's book of monsters and naked people (march 12)

well I've been trying to convince myself to start a sketchbook thread for years now, so now I'm finally going for it. hopefully this will be enough of a kick in my ass to get me to draw more better stuff

I'll most likely be posting sketches of various monsters and some zbrush sculpts, maybe some clay sculpts, and hopefully some nudies. I finally found a new figure drawing group so I'll try and make some stuff good enough to post in here.

so for now, here's a couple monster sketches I drew over the past few days.

go ahead and tear em apart, I need all the feedback I can get.

here's a couple of older drawings...
a good ol' oviraptor, and some odd crab lookin thing colored in pshop.
the crab was kinda fun, I sketched it during a plane ride, then used my pocket camera to get it onto my tablet pc for coloring.

my stuff's pretty sloppy for the most part. I definitely need to focus on finishing things up more.

Arthur Thanks for the advice. I will definitely try and improve on those things.

Chison Thanks. I do typically tend to draw my characters more as studies in stupid poses and very straight on angles since I'm mostly a character modeler, but I'm trying really hard to break away from that and make some cool standalone drawings. I also need to start making model sheets when I'm done with a design for someone (me) to work from.

I'm trying to force myself to do 3/4 view posed characters from now on since I've always had the most trouble with that. So here's one I started last night, it's still a WIP. I started sketching it on paper but decided to start over and do it all digital since I was getting sick of all the erasing

well I'm still trying to finish the one above, but I've got my next one roughed in, so I'll be working on refining both of them over the next couple days or so.

this one is also all digital. I'm still working out the design of the upper torso and upper arms, it's pretty generic right now.

    any feedback is welcome.

hey thanks for the compliments guys!

as for tips on how I paint, um... you don't want any of those from me, cause I'm still trying to figure out how to do it in the first place

so last night was my first session with the figure drawing group I finally found up here.
it's been more than a year and a half since I've done any so it took a little warming up to get back into it.
as you can tell, the first drawing of the night was pretty crappy.

these were all 30 minute poses, except for the third one which ended after about 10 minutes when she realized she couldn't hold the pose any longer.
shame cause I thought that one was headed in a good direction.

anyhow, have a look. lemme know what you think.

    thanks Spaggen

so here's my figure drawings from last night's session. all 30 minute poses again. I missed last week unfortunately.
I'm not very happy with #2 at all. and #4 started out ok but I realized when it was done that her left eye and her left boob are both too high. meh

I can't decide if I want to start trying new techniques or work at getting better with what I've got going here.

thanks for looking. lemme know what you think.

ok here's some new drawings from last night's session. this was a painting night so one long pose for the night, but since I don't feel up to painting yet, I decided I'd finally try out charcoal and newsprint.

this is probably the largest I have ever worked (14x17), and the first time I've ever really given charcoal or conte crayons a solid try. it wasn't too bad, I think I could get to like it after some more practice.

the first one I spent the most time on, then the second one, and the last one in red was about 20 minutes.

I'll post some more monsters soon

ok well, even though this doesn't seem to be going over too well...
here's another monday night figure drawing.

this was another long one since it was painting night. also with charcoal on newsprint.
I'm still struggling with getting the whole image dark enough to make the brightest spots pop, but I feel like this one is closer than my previous attempts at least.

    thanks for looking.

    here's another rough monster.
I like where this one is headed, I'd really like to refine it and polish it up some...

I figure it's better to post something rough than nothing at all though.

well I've been drawing quite a bit lately, I'm trying to every day... so I plan on posting a lot more frequently. the images most likely won't be much better, but there will definitely be more of them

here's a few pages to start with

    edit:
whoa, sorry about the image size... should be a bit better now

thanks for posting ! your work is looking great...

figures are looking good though i'd love to see a bit more rhythm and flow which i think could be solved with a more confident gesture stage (just speculating )

i'd love to see you tackle color with some still life in tradtional medium

keep it up looking forward to more !

    thanks Zorcron

I think you're right about the gesture stuff, that goes for all of my work... now I just need to figure out how to fix it

I really want to get started doing some oil painting. I will probably start in the spring when I can get back to the figure drawing sessions. I am going to need to buy supplies and everything as well, it's a lot to think about.

Hey Nathan, these creature designs are looking pretty damn cool. As for the latest batch, some stronger highlights would definitely add to it. This is some kick ass stuff though. Keep posting.

thanks William! I really dig your work so that is very encouraging to hear.

thank you as well lolbbq. I'm glad to hear people are enjoying some of this.

here's a small batch of new ones. unfortunately I'm dealing with some tough deadlines at the moment so I haven't had as much time to draw lately. hopefully that will change next week.

thanks Nlete. well... usually I just make them up as I draw them. not very exciting. sometimes I'll get a rough shape in mind and start with that.

here's another batch. still dealing with some rough deadlines so I've been a bit slow lately.

    thanks for lookin
