Looking good! Page 6 is full of awesome! Interesting figure drawings on Page 7. I don't think I've seen the figure broken down like that. Has that way helped you learn the figure better?

GHill - thanks man! to be honest, not really. my teacher is one of those old dudes where his way of drawing is the ONLY way to draw. everyone else is wrong apparently, but ill take his word, because his paintings are EPIC. i think the only thing its taught me is to be alot looser when beginning a figure. he likes to use alot of sweeping lines, and almost every line should have a purpose, and connect other lines together. he puts a ton of emphasis on building the figure up through a series of gesture lines, and exaggerated forms. its still very abstract to me, but im slowly picking it up i think.

pencil sketch of some weird demon dude. im pretty happy about this one, because i am pleased to say i used no referance for anatomy or anything. i think im slowly getting more confident with my anatomy, but i also suck at all the anatomy that is covered by his cloak thing, so its a win/lose type deal. oh well, guess i need to do alot more lower body studies.

The self portraits and that demon are looking good man! I've barely picked up my pen since my last post, and here you are busting it out. I gotta get crackin!

Gotta love an old teacher that sticks to his guns. Sounds like he knows his stuff though. I've only just learned how to really see a gesture over the past year or so. I'd read about it for years it seems but it finally clicked after reading some of Drawn to Life. I still forget about gesture a lot and get caught up in the details too soon, but I'm slowly getting there. Anyway, check out that book if you got a couple bucks to throw around. Also, you might like this blog: http://radhowto.blogspot.com/ It's full of great stuff information.

    thanks Wr00m!

    -------------------------

i started on this weeks homework for class, but im also sort of putting my own twist on it too. he wanted us to draw 10 alien portraits, so im testing out my concept ability, see if i am able to develop something beyond 1 lazy sketch. i also need some legitimate concept work for my portfolio, so i think this could also help with that.
so this is kind of a warm up page, before i jump into the more involved design work. i just set this challenge for myself, try to take some kind of basic 2d shape, and see if you can create an interesting face within that shape, then using the previous images, try and stretch the design further, break the mould of the original shape a little, then next i plan on even further refining the designs. i started it kind of late tonight, so im gonna have to finish the rest tomorrow, but here it is so far...

That last image is such a good exercise!! I'm going to steal it but just use it for character faces! Won't be quite as interesting as your alien stuff (which is awesome btw, I'm excited to see where you take them from here!).
Also thats a lot of studies man, keep up that pace and you'll be laughing!
    Keep up the pace man

    Peace
    Dan

danlambert - thanks man! this was alot of fun doing this practice, it forces you to go back and rework old ideas, plus faces are always fun to draw. i think for my next trick i shall try and create a matching set of of bodies to accompany these fine creatures. should be alot of fun!

i dont know why i painted this, random shit even by my standards, but i wanted to try to paint someone with a farmers tan, and for some reason this thing came out. now that i finished it, i think i really should have looked for some references.

this might become something, it might not. just working on my figure from imagination again. although i was thinking of maybe creating a few different characters from the same mould so to speak. try to see how unique i can make each one, while maintaining the same body type. well see if i can get to it.

nice updates! and it's cool to see the different results you become starting from a basic geometric shape.
Btw, if you don't mind me asking, is there any specific sort of paper you use when you're working with markers?
