Excellent stuff, I really like your sketches.
The only problem I have with your Red Riding Hood image, is the background. I think its a bit of a red overload, but thats just me. Cant wait to see how it turns out!

    Nice stuff in here!

For those head sketches, most of the eyes look the same, and it's really killing the nice variety you have in the other features. #5 looks the most different just because his eyes are open wider. Look up some reference and try to vary them! Then those faces will be nice and distinct from one another!

Elz - thanks! -yea, i am very unsatisfied with the red riding hood one, and could have done alot more to it. i just need to work alot more on studies, and color work especially, for future paintings.

Sublimus - thanks for dropping by man! i appreciate the feedback! ive been doing some head studies lately, but there in my traditional sketchbook, and havent had a chance to really scan anything lately. but ill put some more emphasis on the eyes next time. thanks!

    ------------------

im becoming more comfortable with my style, as far as linework is concerned. i really am going to take the time this summer to study values, and color alot more.

and this is just a quick sketch for the current chow... Yakuza!

    Say no words!
Say no more words my friend,
cause the Yakuza is saying everything
instead of you. He is lethal and deadly
at the same time. Incorporate some
dismal mist mixed in with a haze of
    darkness, and you got a
    winning ticket right in
    your back pocket.

Great work Nicky - those yakuza faces especially. This is personal preference but I'd suggest trying varied line weights - with a heavier line for shaded planes and thicker around the "bigger" masses. It's not for everyone but I find it makes for a much better read and looks pretty good too. Looking forward to your next chow!

    Hi Nicky,

    Cool thread/sketchbook!

I know your Red Riding Hood is still a work in progress but I've gotten advice in my thread and am learning something in my art classes that has really been helping me:

Use more desaturated colors in general (and perhaps even more as you move back into your picture). This helps give greater depth and contrast to an image.

Use more tennebrism (sorry had to use a word I just learned in art history : ): IOW greater contrast beween light and dark; and figures that emerge from a dark background.

Anywho, I'm just learning but it was good advice that has gotten me to thinking about (and putting into practice?) in my own art.

    Ciao fer now,

    Jephyr

Thats Yakuza is just amazing man. And the background just is so...perfect. Seriously how'd you manage that it looks amazing and meshes aesthetically well with the rest of the work.

nice Yakuza guy, although I really liked the initial sketch before you went to color it had that asian mob feel to it, I think the background is a bit too distracting a plain white with some blood splatters could be nice, the hobo portrait is rocksorz!

    Yo man!
Such a big update in such a short time, you
have surprised my mountain goat that I got myself
for last Christmas, I was just feeding him, when you updated.
His eyes went swollen. Sub=Zero yeeeeaaah, I like that stuff,
and the Dune characters are also looking promising, they just
asking to be painted. Great shading on that Mongol-Indian guy
and the guy beside him. Exquisite stuff overall, keep sharing your love.
