    Tongue Eating Parasite

This is the creepiest and yet most awesome thing I have seen in a while. Not really a new discovery, apparently, but nevertheless interesting.

Heh. Apparently they aren't life threatening (or much of a bother) to their hosts. I didn't even know fish HAD tongues.

I just don't quite understand how the fish can function with that attached...how would they get food past it?

The obscure biology nut inside me feels the need to point out two errors in the article:

    1) The louse doesn't actually eat the tongue. It just drains blood until the tongue atrophies and dies on it's own. They then feed by acting as a replacement tongue and taking their own small share of all of the food the fish attempts to eat.

    2) While the article implies that the creature is called an isopod, that's a little too general. It's actually known as cymothoa exigua, the tongue eating louse. "Isopods" actually refers to the order including a large number of fourteen-legged crustaceans, from pillbugs to giant isopods (my favourites).

That said, I love those things. I wouldn't call it the creepiest parasite though. I'd have to say that award goes to Leucochloridium Paradoxum (with some close runner-up positions going to the last two things on this page). Mother nature is pretty twisted sometimes.

YIKES. Thanks for the extra info, chriskot!

But the creepiest and worse parasite of all, and an extreme danger to humans does exist. It sucks away of your nutrients and energy for months on end, causes you great pain in your joints, back, and stomach, and it effects your hormones, causing actual emotional turmoil. It can cause typical flu- and stomach flu-like symptoms for many weeks or even months. It weakens your immune system and can cause all sorts of diseases. It grows larger every day and smashes your internal organs aside until they are close to rupturing, then, whenever it's ready, it forces its way out of your system through a small orifice. Then it expects you to continue feeding it for 18+ years and wants all of your money.

    LMAO

In the top pic it looks so happy in there.

Creepy bug, but no less than the one that gets you if you pee while in the water.

Swims up your erm...appliance...and extends spines to keep itself in there.

    Excruciating pain apparently.

That isn't a "bug", but a fish. Candiru's are parasitic fish that attach themselves to the gills of other fish. The reason that they will enter the human urethra is due to the fact the fish are attracted to the release of nitrogenous waste (ammonia/urea) which normally occurs through the gills of fish. So the Candiru *thinks* it's going for a snack of fish blood, and gets stuck inside someone instead.

wow, this stuff is pretty damn freaky.

..but i now want to know how does it 'replace' the tongue, since its not part to the fish's biology ..
