Aw man, scary how good you guys all are. If there's one thing i could say about that portfolio, Id say include MUCH more finished work, maybe put together the figures and gestures into one .jpeg? Needless to say, I think you have a good chance!

Edit: That got me curious, could someone also take a look at my last post in my sketchbook? It's got most of what i want for my portfolio, plus the Coraline still life and the apples and carrot leader one that i think was in an earlier post.

yyates05, maybe you should add figure 8 from your deviantart. My personal favorite figure drawing out of the bunch. That line ink drawing of the shoes look really good too.

Is it okay to include old works like 6 years ago into the portifilo? I'm trying to submit at least 20 artworks.

samethsim: I would strongly discourage putting even 20 pieces into your portfolio; have you spoken with an admissions counselor for some of your prospective colleges, like Ringling?

Keep it closer to 10-15, and keep it to your best pieces. You don't want to show weakness, but you do want to show what you're strong at... No, you don't want to dig up old artwork that doesn't show what you are currently capable of (unless you've been static in your skill for these past 6 years).

Currently populating a webpage w/ work that may or may not go into my final portfolio.
Hope you guys will help me out when I get it set up. Good luck to all of you!

Nikkatzu: Thanks. I wanted over half figures, and the longest pose we do at my figure class is about 45-50min so no time to get too rendered.

samethsim: Thanks.Im really trying to get it down to 10 pieces, but ill put it for now

Thanks Drd, I haven't talk to anyone in Ringling about portfolio, been to worry about financial, and the letters of recommendation getting to Ringling.

Yyates05, if I were to narrow down the pieces, I would get rid of 2, 5, 6, and 13. You should try and replace 12. The photoshop painting isn't as as strong as your other paintings are.

yyates, are you going to include any perspective or architectural/landscape/environment drawings? You've got the figure down, obviously, but remember that they like to see you're familiar with what is surrounding the person, too.

All this has probably been said but anyway: Your figures are looking really good! I agree with what was said before about the digital self portrait. It's just not as strong as your other pieces. I'm digging the 6th figure of the pregnant lady and the still life of the pots! It think you should fill out the figures more to make more value. Good luck!!

QUESTION: how big should the pictures be for your portfolio on slideroom? Just asking ahead of time.

Max of 5.0 Megs, but I called an asked the same thing, I was gonna make my pics huge but they project them so the guy said around 640x480 *some of mine are bigger...* So I would call and not use that as an absolute...

Okay guys, would really like some help on deciding what should go in my portfolio; I plan on sending it to SCAD and Ringling. For SCAD, I'm looking at a major in Sequential arts and a minor in Concept Art; for Ringling, Illustration.

    http://dkcruit.carbonmade.com/

I have one project with sketches and other things that may possibly go into my portfolio, but may not. The portfolio section is what I have as a baselines so far. I have more finished pieces in there than figure studies; can I get some critique?

    Thanks in advance.

That's looking pretty promising but id have a bit more stuff with color in there, just for the hell of it. What is an intaglio print? It sounds neat.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intaglio_%28printmaking%29

A form of printmaking; the link can explain it better than me though. All you need to know is that it gets your hands super greasy and tarry.

I am almost 100% sure I won't get any scholarships from Ringling; I recall one member's portfolio here that totally blows mine out out of the water, his work was professional, and even he didn't get anything...

But I suppose I'll apply anyway. Why do art schools have to cost so much? It's crazy.

Yeah...well...at least Ringling has a reason for costing so much and giving so little. They pour most of their money back into the school's equipment, hence why they're so ahead of the curve.
