    Speaking of Movies..Lets Talk Art

With some of the threads talking about movies an idea crossed my mind. Taking all movies and genres. Who is your fav movie artist? Set design, mat paintings, production art all that. Also show your fave artist's work from the movies you like best.

I myself am very fond of Ralph McQuarrie. I was first introduced to his work for Star Wars and fell in love with his style right away.
He has a page at http://www.ralphmcquarrie.com

What's the medium for all of Ralph's images? I've never seen anything like that, the texture on colors seem washed out and unlike any physical medium I've seen, unless it's just the old photography that's tricking me.

Yea the photos are not that good. I have seen much better images showing his work which is much richer in colore and tones.

Of course, I must admit, most of the above mentioned artists are some of my favorite images around.

    I LOVE this thread.

One thing I'm having a hard time finding. Going back a ways here but I can't seem to find any production art from Forbidden Planet. I can find some costume and publicity stills but no art.

OMG, Seth Engstrom is my new hero. Those architectural drawings are SICK. I looked him up and found even more face melting awesomeness. I love it when I find/am introduced to someone I've never heard of who's just astoundingly good. It's like coming across a really awesome band that you'd never heard of and it turns out they already have a bunch of albums out. THANK YOU BILL!

So, to continue to gush about Seth Engstrom. I've been transfixed by his work all day and something that occurred to me was that I enjoyed looking at his work so much because I felt like I was learning just by looking at it, like it was tickling my brain. Specifically I think his value structures are just fucking amazing, and that there's an ENORMOUS amount to be learned (by me anyway, I guess it depends on your skill level ) in WHY they're so amazing. His centers of focus are really well defined. There's no confusion about where anything is or what your supposed to be looking at in the picture, your eye goes right to it. In some of the pieces the contrast falls off in a nearly radial pattern that acts like an attention spotlight. Beyond that there's a beautiful, rhythmic quality to the shapes in his compositions. The way he plays clusters of small details against larger areas of value creates a harmonious quality that just takes the compositions to a whole other level. I realize that's kind of the goal of most compositions, but I think he's executed to such a high level that it bears commenting on. That series of sketches of the waterways with all the arches seems like a textbook of compositional rhythm and shape harmony.
