I hope it's not too late to throw one last idea -
Make something genuinely scary. I don't mean scary for your character, "the little girl is afraid of clowns, so it's scary" or in a funny way "I'm afraid of clowns so here's a clown". I mean scare the fuck out/disturb the viewer. Kind like those screamers. Everyone fell for those the very first time they tried one.
