some entries from my mini-sketchbook and my stuff from imagination

Also, I need to write this down so I'll remember:

-"Well designed lighting will paint the picture for you."
    -"Draw from the inside out."
-"Be willing to destroy your artworks to re-build them and make them much better."
    -"Bring your sketchbook EVERYWHERE."

Got the idea from the DSG section. This should've taken a day at max to complete, but I somehow managed to spread this out to 3 - 4 days.

More mini sketchbook entries! Includes some gestures, mark-making, observational sketches, and a creepy self-portrait using red and green as a basis. Also, an observational sketch in charcoal.

I feel so happy when I draw because I know I am learning and improving every day! Watching this helps me get into the zone from time to time: Kill Bill - Pai Mei the Teacher. What a lesson on humility and perserverance!

Now, some mini-sketchbook entries and a figure drawing page.

Stock photos for the sketchbook figure drawings are courtesy of mjranum on DA and can be found here. Oops. Forgot to mention that in the last post.

And the other two are studies of Raphael's "School of Athens" (can be found here). My goal is to analyze the relationship between positive and negative shapes and how they work as a whole to form a successful composition.

EDIT: My bad. I should've given credit to the ref photo properly.

Tons of sketches from last week and this week. I didn't get a chance to scan a good bulk of it 'til today. And I've included more master studies of Raphael's "School of Athens."

Been a little lax with my drawings lately. Most of them are just gestures, but at least it's something.

It's cool to see you working so hard... makes me want to try harder and study from life, too.

Can I ask, are you in an art class? How do you decide what exercises you are going to try/what to focus on?

    Hello there.

I'm taking an intro to film class, which is technically considered a fine arts class at my school. However, I'm not taking any drawing or painting classes this semester.

And honestly, I sketched whatever I currently felt like drawing at the moment, but I tried to draw every day and challenged myself anyway I could. I had watched free videos from the TAD website some time ago. Ever since I watched the George Pratt video about using your sketchbook as a learning tool, I carried my sketchbook every day with me. But now since school has started and I can't take drawing/painting classes 'til next year, I'm having a hard time just finding the time to draw.

If you would like to study more from life, try carrying around your sketchbook (maybe a smaller one that's suited for studying on the go). When you don't think about how to draw and measure "correctly" and see things more intuitively, it's amazing what kinds of results you might produce. And you might learn more about your strengths and weaknesses as an artist.

So, go draw, learn, and most importantly, have fun!!

Good advice. I will try to be more diligent.

As an aside, I just realized I saw your man hitting an anvil painting on gaiaonline once. I doubt you remember me but I used to go by Badeye.

See you around, thanks for the tips.

college = less time to draw

I really want to take a life drawing class, but I can't take any drawing or painting classes 'til next semester or next year.

So, I've been delving a little more into my imagination, and I feel like I'm starting to develop a style that I like. It's amazing what you can do when you push your foundational knowledge. I've more character designs and other stuff straight from my head, but I need to find the time to scan them.

Also, by scrimmaging some of the posts around here, I found some really useful tips about drawing environments. So, the first thing on my agenda is to diagnose my strengths and weaknesses with environments by drawing one without refs and making a speedpaint (the first sketch in this post). Hopefully, I'll get around to making quick plein air paintings.

Credits to the ref photos for some of the sketches:

oh, I like your work a lot! especially your figure drawings and gesture sketches I'd like to see more of your colored works though! it seems like you've been practicing a lot with value, so I wanna see how you pull it off with colors

    keep it up!

    Frost-Vixen: Will do!

You know what I just realized today? I've learned quite a bit about light and color ever since my drawing I and II classes. Now that I've watch part of Jason Manley's video on color theory, my knowledge in that area has increased significantly. And ever since I've started to observe how color behaves when I walk outside, I'm beginning to apply in my observations practically. Just today when I was working on my editing project for my film class, I was really loving the color adjustments I made. (You know how the colors captured by camcorder are kinda blah?)

I'm just so glad to see that this is starting to pay off!

    1. A Monster Within: I drew this after a witnessing a bad confrontation. :/ I saw this person for who they really were - a monster. So, I drew a monster. Plus, I had some ideas in my had I wanted to get out, but I never thought it turned out this way. When I was drawing this, I was trying to challenge myself by drawing from the imagination with out using refs. I tried to use color to depict a spatial relationship (background, middle ground, foreground). And what I learned from this is that I need to work on drawing three-point perspective . . .

    2. 1st en plein air: This wasn't a really pleasant experience. After I finished whatever I was doing that day, it was 6:30 and I had about 30 minutes or so before nightfall. So, I had to deal with trying to mimic colors in a changing lighting condition. And, I had to try to figure out how to smooth out the colors. So I used white to blend things. NEVER AGAIN. Should've known better.

    3. 2nd en plein air: the next day, I tried again with oil pastels, and tried an impressionistic approach for the trees. Really loved it! Plopping down dots of colors really made blending the colors of trees fun. However, I still had a problem of trying to smoothing out colors for other areas, like the pavement and that rusticated median. I still used white but not as much as the first time, and I used more peach for blending.

    4. oil pastel mark marking: testing out what I could do with oil pastels

    5. Incubus: Just some random idea I had. Again, from the imagination and no refs used. I realized that drawing male figures was helping me alot. Then I also realized that I need to work on legs, hands, and animals.

    6. Posemaniac gestures: Ah, just the usual from Posemaniacs.

    7. people gesture: I don't really make gestures of moving targets. So I thought of making gestures of a person was moving around here and there. I'm getting there . . .

    8. random idea: Just something that came to mind when I was listening to creepy chase music. I learned from this that I need to draw the backside of guys. Also, I really gotta push myself to do backgrounds from imagination.

    9. 3rd en plein air: I got my Kuretake water brush in the mail that day, so I grabbed it along with my Crayola watercolor set. Beforehand, I had seen some really awesome watercolor pieces made with the Crayola brand. At first when I was laying down color from the watercolor palette, I was frustrated with how bright and kiddie-looking (of course) the colors were, yet they didn't have enough pigments (also another given). I had no idea how to desaturate these colors to make them more natural-looking nor how to push the values. So, I used my off-brand artist watercolor pencils that I had on hand and wet them on paper. Turned out better than I expected, but I might want to invest on some professional grade watercolor set.

Got around to scanning my fourth en plein air sketch. Done in oil pastel.

It didn't occur to me 'til after my hour was up that I could've put in a little bit of orange to neutralized the dark blues in the water (and to reflect the concrete in the water). I did have fun doing the water though.

EDIT: added the photo for comparison

Wow, already seeing improvement over the entire sketchbook. Good job on your color work as well, wish I had the motivation to do some studies on color, could really use them.

Good thing you're doing those pose-studies from posemaniacs, but I woud suggest to also do some longer anatomy studies. Grts

cpt. kuDa: Thanks, and I'll try to find figure drawing sessions or grab a hold of someone to model.

An en plein air and character design sketch. Is it just me, or does Sal look a little bit like David Bowie?

I thought I'd try something different this time. By that, I mean do drawing exercises with my left hand. left hand + pastels = less control = less details = more shapes :d
