Thread: Team Chow II: Ken-Do-Pu-En-Ds
August 4th, 2009 #61
I'm feeling better about the no sci-fi thing, because last night I kept thinking that they might not be cool with that in the mod thread. Besides, I was starting to feel all mushy in the brain area about how some stuff was going to be incorporated... but never mind since it's a mute point now anyways.
I'm going to start some sketching now, I'm liking some of the thoughts/sketches floating around... And KenSIR I think the Waterhouse is spot on... That would be my usual palette as well, so it seems like at least a few of us are extremely comfortable with that.
As for the switching thing.... I'm feeling dubious about that, but I can see where you're coming from. I think maybe if we just kept showing each other WIPs when we get to designing, and then do brief paintovers and then let the initial artist decide what to do with it, that we might get things done a little faster? Then again, the thought of switching it up a little bit here and there and working on a different perspective might be refreshing for the whole team. Okay crap, I've just muddled myself into indecision LOL
As for the races, it said specifically in the rules that we need to have more of a random smattering... So I think that we should pick more than two, or the mods may force us back to the drawing board. And I think a couple of them should definitely be more... stereotypical High Fantasy fodder, such as elves/dwarves? And then have... whatever else we were thinking of, like I was thinking of a Faun, and I keep seeing some cool Minotaur looking critturs in posts in here.
Anyways. That was my brief two cents, now I'm going to go sketch and wait for the man to come fix my air conditioner *CRIEs* it's literally ninety two degrees in my apartment right now and 90% humidity. blah.

What I've gotten done in approximately an hour... I'm debating a whip, or maybe some kind of flail or mace? Depending on what the primary weapon would be, he might have a dagger or something.
Just kinda fooling around with shapes and stuff, I need to research goat legs and horns.
Dude. he looks like he's about to start a DANCE FIGHT
Also, looking back through and thinking about the mountains thing... I keep picturing them being like, big, difficult to pass/live in type of mountains, Himalaya style. Which makes me keep picturing a lot of harsh weather/snow and very warm clothes, as opposed to the more drapey and light Greek clothes... Almost more like Mongols? Dunno. Just throwing stuff out there. It would give us something more in the way of armor/weapons to look at. And even more of a reason for dispute and quests and stuff like that... you really would have to fight to live in a place like that, and resources couldn't be taken from someone else without a huge conflict starting. *shrug*

Awesome awesome ... hahaha dancing fight.
Sarah and Ambient, keep going with your directions.
I like everyone's ideas so far. Let's just keep drawing.
I love that Polska heart, and this Texan clutz.
Just throwing it in.
1 dying human
2 hybrids - Linds' Faun and Sarah's creature from the portal.
1 neutral/assassin/war monger
In the bad lands. The base of mountains that hug a coast line.
Summer or Winter?
Kenny, are you taking the human character route?
I really want to do some type of hybrid/ some kind of monster.
Forget the neutral for now, but something to think about I reckon. [well, I've been thinking about it]
George, stop working and work on this.
I'll post some kind of shapes in 8 hrs. I really need a *hahaha magical spork. I need a nap.

Thinking my other character might be some kind of elf or dwarf, something to help fulfill the "high fantasy" part of the endeavor. That or I could stand to do that dying human that you listed. >:F That could be really interesting.... dunno. I'll futz around here some more once I get things in better shape over here, this day fucking sucks so far. [have a napful nap. I hear those are nice]
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *breath* HHHHHHHHH.
August 4th, 2009 #65
The elf or dwarf could be the shifty neutral I was thinking of.
The dying human must still be able to stand when we take the photo for line-up presentation.
For some reason this is what I've been sketching. The dying man's family.

Wow! How to catch up after all of this! I was at school all day!
Great work folks! I was thinking about it all day!
I dont know where to start!
Firstly-great drawings and ideas!
switching- silly idea. Just giving solid feedback on each others WIP would be good.
I think its good that dwardo is trying to get the races figured out and dished up. This needs to be the forward steps. We can always work out the infrastructure kinks later. So I will jump right to that topic.
I am okay with the number but my suggestion would be:
1 demigod for the 1 dying man race
1 hybrid race and 1 demigod of the hybrid (so the demi's can fight?)
1 neautral character. maybe the minotaur race, or monster kind of race. Just killing what they can. Like animals. I dont know how they would fit into the group photo though... hmmm
I like the idea of dwarves, probably more so then elves simply because I think elves are over played.
I dont mind doing the man race at all! Anything works for me! I want to draw some sweet armor.
I think summer would be more fitting if we stick to a greekish theme. And location- mountains might be too extreme. I like the coastal idea, and I would throw in a forest idea or perhaps a valley. The battle valley. Often old armies would choose locations to fight, and they might fight there several times, not so much in Greece but other parts of Europe. Maybe around a fortress??
I am going to assume I am working the man race and will start some drawing. I will post later tonight with some goods!
edit-posting a helmet concept- kind of trying out some animal like concepts. input??

I like the silhouette Kenneth. Maybe just the horns for now. It reminds me of that Transformer leader. The one that, out of all the picks to be, decided to become a dumb truck. Animals and insects are always nice reference. Aggressive aggressive I say.

Wowow-wait...you dont like the horns? I dont even know if my man will have a helmet on-just thought I would throw it out there. Here are some more sketches-more just poses of the half dead guy. Is it what you were thinking of?
edit-vshen-Saweet! I REALLY like the first one. Very God like- in a kind of scary way...?? Nice work!

2. for the mobility in those legs, try overlaying any of the organic brush over them for more variations.
3. for that hair-do and a floater.
6. for arms as legs. the movement when animated will be freaky asz shit.
8. for the demonic stance.
7. those stranglers are always bad ass.
After the competition I want to model and rig some of our characters out, and do some Z-Brush passes on them.
Texturing sucks though, but whoever wants to try out the 3D side with these assets, it would be sweet, no?
I'd love to learn along with you guys again.
Kenneth: Oh shoot, I forgot you were doing the human.
Mate, do whatever you want with it actually. I want to see your bad-assery.
I've forced you to make one look weak. If he was standing up straight with a big gash on on his abdominals though
and he still has a bad ass face, that would be something.
[Sarah, am I typing too much?] hahahaha.
The headgear is cool, I missed the details on it. Sick sick sick.
[You got to share your construction method] [Everyone check your email addys]
My ultimate headgear to beat is the Highlander original. The bad guy helmet.
"It's better to burn out, than to fade away".
n did you see 'hurt man's' family in the previous post. He's got 7 kids; Potent.
edit: cheers Mike.

Anyways-- Like the helmet actually, it made me think of these poor little mortals trying to give themselves some courage and a badass look for fighting minotaurs... or . something LOL
And yes, I agree that elves are highly overdone. I was always more of a dwarf person myself (being six feet tall, I have so much in common with them). I will start working on the dwarf and look into some armor/clothing/weapons kind of things.
I'm also digging the summer... maybe the mountains are coastal? But mountains would be ideal for a dwarf now that I think of it.
What is this group picture I keep hearing about? Aside from the four portraits each, is there something else we should all be looking at together?
August 5th, 2009 #75
Ok guys, I am out until friday night! I will check back then. Keep it up!
August 5th, 2009 #76
Guys I'll try to get some sketches done today, I have to attend to some client work and paperwork today.
Anything from the silhouettes I posted working for anyone? Is there anything you would want me to work further on?
Kenny thanks for stopping by my sketchbook really appreciate it

Everything looks cool cool.
-Lindsay and Sarah, you're on the same page with dwarf love.
-Don't forget your Rambo knife Kenneth.
-George you and I have to start sketching stuff.
So far we're looking at
Who: 1 human, 2 demigods, 1 hybrid, and 1 neutral. (hybrid dwarf or neutral dwarf ???)
Where: Mountain by a portal, surrounded by red ocean. 5 moons. Hahaha.
When: Yonkers ago with Waterhouse feel/colours.
Why: "Who ate the last pancake?" I'mma ask you again nicely. Who ate the laasst ... PANcaaaake! Sorry,
there it is.
Group picture, let me get back to you on that one Lindsay.
[Is it me, or the full competition details keep hiding itself around this board?]

have same feeling dwardo - its like all information are being spread evenly in the main topic round questions and answers, but not in first brief.
hey girls, I will play with what you posted, and do some new sketches today, as I have feeling that guys here took boring normal human/armor and background thing for a moment
we, with invincible woman-power, will get to those strange good-looking creatures
<still having flu, but feeling slightly better>

aw, rest well, and yes, invincible woman-power will most likely see us all through in the end *sage nod*
And I was thinking [*jabs dwardo*] that the dwarf would be, for starts, plain ol' good and evil, since that is the main objective I think for the CHOW. Once I'm finished with the main two charas/two alignments, if there is time I think that I'd really like to try my hand at a shifty neutral. I just know that I suck with keeping deadlines in mind, so I'd like to make absolutely sure that I finish the others first. Still like the idea though.
Why couldn't the five moons be peanut shaped?
dwarf love for the win.
August 6th, 2009 #82
August 6th, 2009 #83
Why can't the five moons be of our faces. Be serious Lindseee n Sarah. K.
[I'm feeling monkeyish now]
Definitely keep with the basics evs (everyone) all others will be a bonus
and did I mis-interprete the info. 8 portraits all up, that means 4 characters, with good and bad, right?
What on earth have I been informing? *smacks coconuts
[I've been running on empty, and my spelling's getting worse].
I'll double check slowly. And I still can't find the final info for this competition. Helpers.

Been really busy at the moment and really can't think straight right now. I though I'd give a faun type creature a try just like what AmbientSounds started.
I don't know what to think of it but that's the best I could come up with at the moment until I get rid of some more work so I can clear my head.

George: I like the mask and spear. The feet are probably a tad big, but I can definitely feel some intensity.
Sarah: oooo ... :teeth
dwarf witch/cleric ... i got to try that out.
This is the second badonkadonk character I've seen today. Hahaha.
-Double heads, nice, I didn't think of that, and oh my goodness those feet are scary.
-About the arms/hands, hmmm, let's give it a try, I reckon small hands, like all little kids that want to touch everything that could possible knock them out are pretty dangerous.
[You seem to have a natural talent for making things scary nice]. -We should collaborate after this one too.
Lindsay and Sarah, he wants to dance. No underwear. I forgot hahaha
Anito: (Spirits) Troublemakers
I don't know, some guy that likes to carve into wood and 'Hello Man'.
Grab my hand. Shake my hand.
