Today's work... out of the 2 crops, this one is my least favorite... good book cover fodder.. lol
hey, wow, a great idea for some landscapes and the results are looking good! I would throw a few crits in if you don't mind though:
Firstly, you could really do with softening some of those edges (couldnt we all!). Remember that where the contrast is low, where a material is soft, where something is out of focus (often nearer the edges of an image) then the edges shouldnt be too sharp, or it draws attention away from the focal point(s).
Secondly, you often use photo-overlays in the background, which there is no problem with, except that they are often highly detailed and this brings the rear of the image "forward" flattening it.
Thirdly, when using colour in this series you put your most saturated colours in the background of the image. Although this can occur in nature it is not common, as "purer" colours are usually found closer due to there being less atmosphere between the eye and the object.
Ok enough crits for now, but on the complementary side, I love the way you are using warm light on those rocks to complement the blue themes!
Anyway, I hope that helps, and if you like I'll do a paintover of some sort for you soon
Thank you so much for the crit! I really appreciate your advice...
I completely agree with the need for "softening edges"... I really think posts #170 and #172 could be worked on quite a bit more in that aspect as well as the color/contrast issues you brought up. The photo overlay in post #172 is quite stark as well, and I need to take care of it...
If you (OR ANYONE) ever feels like doing a paint over, please be my guest.
I view this sketchbook as a chance for people to throw out ideas at my work and for me to grow... so I welcome it all!
