    Icon IDW #105: Domestic Transformer

    IDW #105: Domestic Transformer

    Topic: Domestic Transformer

Background: I suppose most of you have watched the 2nd Transformer movie by now, so I thought it might be fun to have a topic inspired by it.

However, instead of going for the enormous bots that break down whole Pyramids, we're keeping it small. One of the first scenes in the movie is where a bunch of household appliances come to live and break down the kitchen, and the topic this time is to design similar transformers.

Pick a household appliance of your choice (probably best to just look around your own house for the washing machine, coffee machine or fridge -maybe take a few pictures) and transform it into a ..well, transformer. You can also pick any domestic appliance you find on the internet for inspiration.

Both the original version and the transformer bot version need to be visible in your final entry! Also, you may opt not to stick with the style from the recent movies if you want, I know that there's people out there that didn't like it.

    Brief:
    1. Topic: Domestic Transformer!
    2. Pick a household appliance of your choice and turn it into a transformer - both versions need to be in your final entry!
    3. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Saturday, July 26

Ill do it. I need to get back into art, and this is the easiest thing TO get back into, unlike enviroments and people. And with a son, full time job, AND moving, this will keep me entertained. And yes Yoitisi, ill post some wiremesh screens just for you since.

Digital Blacksmith: I'm surprised to see you back in here to be honest, but I'll allow it for now I think. Don't make me regret that decision.

Hm...does this have to be a humanoid robot when transformed? Arms, legs, head, whatever? I like this idea but really hate the Transformers designs, plus didn't actually see the latest movie.

Crises: Yeh humanoid is the idea, since they are Transformers after all. It's not necessary to stick to the design style from the last 2 movies, nor is it necessary to actualy have seen those.

Ahhh, damnit. I had some ideas but they wouldn't be humanoid at all. Thanks for the clarification.

This is my first IDW, seems like a great opportunity to practice a type of work I haven't done much of before! Here are a couple sketch ideas for a circular-saw transformer. I'm not really done with the idea phase, but I thought it'd be nice to get some work up and see if there's any feedback. I'm trying to re-create a little bit of the flavor from the original animated film. Not sure if the 'bot is humanoid enough, or if the transformation is quite dramatic enough (the arms just kind of split apart and pull away.) Still thinking of different things I can do with the saw blade. Anyway, here goes!

WaffleKoan- Nice sketches, I think you could push it a lot more for the transformation, if you notice in the movies some of the transformations make no f'n sense as far as where all the extra components came from. Just as long as we can see the major elements of the original appliance.

Pic of my inspiration, I'm definitely not going with the "Transformer" style bots. Hopefully this can kind of fall under appliances

CKLamb - Thanks, I'll definitely push things further as I continue to sketch. I'll have to check out a few movie clips too, a little more research should help. That clock is a great idea, I can't wait to see what you come up with!

EDIT: I like this concept a lot more, just need to nail down the components so it's obvious that this robot transforms into this particular saw.

I'll have to see what I can come up with for this one. This looks like a fun one. Excellent idea, sir!!!

I love the saw and clock. Can't wait to see how those turn out.

I am having a freaking blast working on this, robots kick ass! I was wondering if any of you awesome industrial designers had any crits before I start tightening up the linework. I'm playing it pretty loose with functionality, in the vein of the original Transformer cartoons, but I'd like the design to look plausible at least - as if all the parts fit together correctly.

waffelKoan well I'm not an "awesome industrial designer" but I'd like to say how great I think your concept is.
Can't wait to see what you are going to do for a face. As an answer to perhaps Insecticons, your 'Toolbot' looks both functional and dangerous.

Just one small observation, and it may just be me, the guide plate on his back draws a little focus from the head. (might just be me) Can't wait to see more!

WaffleKoan: Be careful with your perspective, on a bunch of places it goes everywhere. It's not a huge issue with the cartoony style you've got going, but here and there it might get annoying. Also, maybe pay a bit more attention to the joints of your bot. Especially the elbows seem to lack some functionality.

bakadoodle - thanks! You could be right about the guide plate, I'm toying with the idea of rotating it to point back in toward the center.

yoitisi - thanks for the crit! I threw down some gridlines and it looks like at least 7 or 8, maybe 10 point perspective! I hope to get it down to at least 5 or 6 point Playing around with the knees/elbows as well, still not sure if they should be simple hinges or something complex with lots of cables and stuff snaking out

I think it would be to far out but thinking about changing my mountain bike into a robot
if not I've always been intrigued what my blender would look like if it came alive!

Wafflekaon: Hey man really like the design, I agree with yoitisi that the joints need to seem more functional.
for the guard thingy I was thinking they split in two and create some wing type things on his back, could create a nice composition with them
    here is an example:

WEll, this is my current concept in the works. I decided to scrap the electric knife for we already have a cool blade robot in here, and I wanted some fire. So, I created the mighty, the great, the all mighty wind proof ZIPPO-BOT! Powered by its own flames and steam as well as the turning of the trigger in its chest to create a bit of electricity.

But yeah, I plan on adding alot more detail, mainly in the arms and shoulders. But just wanted to give a quick try out on this tiny badboy.

Bagg - Great idea about the wings, your image reminded me of the little Gundam toys I used to put together! I riffed on it a little bit, splitting the plate in half did make a nice compositional tool. Good call on the joints as well, I put some work into them, (adding little hydraulics and cables and put a kind of U-joint on the elbows) as well as hammering on all the perspective problems. (Thanks yoitisi). Anyway, a bike and a blender are both nice ideas (especially the bike!), but you're right - the bike transformer would definitely require some thought.

Digital Blacksmith - I'm sure there's room for two blade 'bots, the electric knife idea sounds cool! I like your Zippo sketch too, though - especially the face and how the top butterflies open. I'm curious what his arms and innards are going to be made of

I dont have much time left. I came home from my canooing trip one day early (apparently 60 km didnt take as long as we thourd) but i couldent figure out a proper design. I spend some time trying to twist an ipod, and looked at some other stuff, but most of it is just boxes. Damn modern day design Decided to go with a shaver, one of my first ideas aswell. Heres design and the color palete i ripped from the original shaver reference. I think ill go with a redish BG for the action shot, since it works well with blue...

Hey rabies sorry I'm not at home with my tablet at the moment but I was thinking maybe flip the razor and use the blade pad things as feet and make it into a tripod type creature ( half life 2 - strider)
that would look awesome, but thats up to you just thought I'd give my 2 cents
good luck hope I'm back in time to get mine finished this time.

Thanks, but Yoitisi said it had to be humanoid, which was really my biggest problem in the design phase. Ill be up with a wip of the action shot tommorow, i think i had a artists block today or something :p

Trying to keep it nice and simple

I couldent see any other purpose for a shaver to turn into a transformer, other than to kill. So yeah i guess gore was a must.
Last time CS wanted me to go B&W first like i used to, but im trying to get used to the blocking in...

    On to the comments..:
bakadoodle: 3d eh? so your planning on ACTUALLY transforming it? Like in fact moving the parts around? thats so badass ;P show some wips!

    CSLamb
Awesome idea, it has great potential. Show some wips!

DigitalBlacksmith good idea, not very realistic tough the hands are great, keep at it.

WaffleKoan Not much to say... just keep working

the zippo design looks really cool
I would make the shaver more slim, now he looks so fat :p
