ROUND #166 :: Pride and PrejudiceDESCRIPTION
Pride and Prejudice
Yes Colin Firth nailed it for many, but put him out of your mind for now. Put Jennifer Ehle and Kiera Knightly out too, because this week your challenge is to interpret Mr Darcy and/or Elizabeth Bennet from ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. One or the other or both, it’s up to you. We’d like to see people stick to historical accuracy and dress them in the Regency/Napoleonic clothes of two hundred years ago, but it’s up to you.
Character descriptions from Wikipedia:
Fitzwilliam Darcy is the main male protagonist. At twenty-eight years old and unmarried, Mr. Darcy is the wealthy owner of the famously superior estate Pemberley in Derbyshire. Portrayed as handsome and intelligent, but not convivial, his concern with decorum and moral rectitude is seen by many as an excessive concern with social status. He makes a poor impression on strangers, such as the people of Meryton, but is valued by those who know him well.
Elizabeth Bennet is the main female protagonist. The reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint. The second of the Bennet daughters at twenty years old, she is portrayed as intelligent, lively, attractive and witty, with her faults being a tendency to judge on first impressions and perhaps being a little selective of the evidence she uses to base her judgments upon. As the plot begins, her closest relationships are with her father, her sister Jane, her aunt Mrs. Gardiner and her neighbour Charlotte Lucas.
Pride and Prejudice is one of the most read novels in history. We don’t expect people who haven’t read it to do so for the challenge, but it is available to do so online at:
There has been a recent Zombie version of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, so no Zombies please!

Posting this for Aly as he's away this weekend!
Final. Didn't have time to really put in final details so finished for now. Looked at a bunch of classic portraits for this, not that it shows!
Hey guys, Posh is out for this weekend and I'm going to be super busy, so I'm extending the deadline to NOON on Tuesday, Eastern Standard Time. (GMT -5)
The new round will be up as-per-usual sometime tomorrow afternoon.

My Darcy is finished, thank you for the extension
I was going for a classical portrait look, like he would have on his wall.
For colouring and costume detail I used Ingres for reference

the 25th is the anniversary of Leyendecker's death. So I've been looking at a lot of his work and this piece is very much a Leyendecker inspired painting.
nice round everyone

Here's my final, Darcy and Elizabeth in a more romantic pose than you'd find them throughout the book. Lets just say that this is AFTER they're married, past the end of the book.

Man, I haven't been so stressed about a deadline in a while! There's loads more refining I want to do, as well as add in some regency furniture or some other excting background objects. I skimped on Darcy too, his pose was going to be a bit more interesting but time got to me.
Process is on the blog
Final. Sorry about the bad compression on the WIP, I'll update it with a better image this evening.
POLL IS UP!
No cuts today. Good work folks! :]
Please remember to keep the naming convention!
I'm in a terrific mood today, so if I see some more finals in here I might slip them in the thread....
Voted for Evil_Sloth (lovely style, when I first saw it when you posted it in here it immediately caught my eye ), Pixel (just love it), Posh (awesome style and I LOVE the composition) and Alice (again, I like the style and those two certainly do make a nice couple ^.^) although there were a lot of other entries I quite enjoyed:
Fluorine:the only reason why I didn't vote for this one was because, to me, it rather looked like a noblewoman from the roman empire
Hideyoshi: what put me off was that something about the shading of her face doesn't seem quite correct to me... apart from that, it's a really good picture. I mean, everyone loves those flowers, I think ;D
rook: The picture certainly is really good but there's something that kind of put me off... can't quite put my finger on it, though :/
klortho: the face was really well done but overall it looks too smooth/digital and well, the anatomy is getting worse and worse towards the feet
no_name_brand: it's certainly well done and it also is funny but I don't quite like your Elizabeth. In my opinion she seems kind of dislikeable (mean and cheap, for some reason)
My 2 cents ^^
Here are my choices and my reasons:
Evil_Sloth: i simply love everything in this picture - from composition through to brushstrokes
PoshSpice: 'tis a beautiful lady in a gorgeous dress with a very determined expression
Alice: i think it is a very tender piece that well captures the relationship between Lizzy and Mr.Darcy; i also love the soft colours
Apart from that, I liked the serene gaze of IndigoSummers' piece and no_name_brand's made me smile. rook, i really liked your piece as a complete illustration but for some reason when i look at the characters they appear to me somewhat younger or probably less experienced than i imagine them
tommoy: sweet colours, they make me feel cheerful
