Newborn: Birth of Adam (Finally Finished)

So pretty much, the Sumerians(the oldest civilization to date) has this tale of how an alien race known as the Anunaki(s) created man from genetically altering the embryo of a Homo-erectus and planting them in fourteen birth goddess after a ten month gestation period.

I kind of wanted a more human appearance of the Anunaki people and not something out of this world because man was created in their image after all. So the scene here is where Inanna, goddess of love, fertility and war presents the the birth of Adam, the first human, to the committee.

Final image will be posted here.

    UPDATE: 7/30/09

    Just got done today!!!

Been slaying over this painting...18 hours a day literally with 5-6 hours of sleep for the last two weeks. I've never done anything this extensive and demanding before. Each of the smaller character took about 2 to 3 hours to render out, it was tiresome but fun at the same time and i learned so much about color while doing this piece! The original document that i worked on is pretty big, about some 10000 pixels by 4000 pixels, so i work pretty big. It's too bad the final submission have to be shrunk down to minimum 1000 pixels width. I'd wish i had more time because i found out about the contest two weeks ago.... The main complaint i have about this painting is that after i convert the RIFF file to photoshop, i lost most of my shiny textures, those were the highlight of the painting and no you can barely see them, probably only a little when zoomed in to a 100 percent...oh well...

All done from imagination. Any likeness or similarities are probably going to be coincidental....lol

I used Corel Painter 11 with the artist oil bristle brush and some brush tweaking...

Anyways, it was fun and i wish everyone the best of luck!
Attached are some close ups and some process...

the sketch is still in the early stages and there still needs a lot of fixes, like a lot of tangents and design of clothing, perspective, etc. I'm hoping to do the fixes as i go along the coloring process.

The idea was based on these sketches below that i did about 2 months ago. i just thought i would be great to elaborate it into an illustration.

crazy. nice job. i like how the cloak of the Anunaki "king" is actually the curtains. i saw that in a movie i guess..was it The Cell...nevermind that. you could fix this anytime. i just love your line. and another thing - the fire from the fire pit is a bit too abstract. try to make it more naturish.. keep it coming. i'd love to see the final work !!

    Oop!

Was browsing through this thread and I accidentally hit #2 on the thread ranking thingie at the bottom, which I thought it was the page count instead.

My bad...if I had known I was ranking this thread, I would've given it a 10...beautiful concept, and I'm loving what you have so far.

So, im not sure ill finish this in time cause im working incredibly slow and my mac sucks too. Also, im painting everything from imagination. So, i decided to work in batches. I crop the queen and started to color her first. The color choices are totally random and i did not even do a color comp(maybe later perhaps.) Anyways I've only started painting in oils about a couple of months ago and i wanted to have the same effect for this piece and the first thing that popped into mind was Painter. If i finish this, I'll be the first digital piece that i actually finish!!!

Heres where i am so far and some close ups

    Thanks for the comment, guys!

Looking great Kuraudo. From your lineart, it looks like it will going to take a long time to finish it.

Anyway I find the impasto effect a bit too shiny unless that's what you aiming for. Other than that lovely colours. Keep it up.

Whoa, Epic is RIGHT. Love the warmth you're building in your skin tones (of course it only comes off as remarkably warm because it contrasts with the cools in the skin tones, but you know what I mean)

Classical stuff reminding me of Alma Tadema and the likes. Love that first drawing, Kuraudo. It's going to be an absolute corker, looking at the painterly approach and rich colours. Finish it whether it be in time for the deadline of not. It will be worth it.

My fingers are crossed that you make the deadline though. Has to be a strong contender for sure.

KILLER drawing. I absoulutely love the composition and drawing. Do you ever paint this kind of thing with oils? If not, you should because it would be awsome. I'm looking forward to seeing this done. Amazing job so far.

    Update.

Well.....painted the kids in a day and a half. Things go much slower when your painting from imagination and trying to solve your problems while at it as well. I'll try to get this half of the painting done by this weekend. That leaves the other 70 percent for next week!!!

I got no internet at my place as well. When you a broke college student, it's pretty common. So, i gotta walk ten big city blocks to get to the academy library to post this...sigh.
