    Sleep

How much do you sleep? At 21 I seem to be getting 5-6 hours average and function just fine. Lately since I have had strep I have slept some really weird hours.

For those of you who have really bad sleep patterns, how do you get off of them and how did they start? Sleeping pills any fun?

5-6 average for me, who needs sleep when there's things to do! To get back into regular sleeping patterns I stay up one night then am exhausted enough to start sleeping regularly from the next night.

4.5 hours per night since Feb. 5.5 the months prior.

Longest straight stretch 55 hours...a business trip last month to sf and I worked every moment I was not eating or taking a restroom break. I did catch my sleep when I got home though. Ten hours.

The thing is I have been so inspired lately that I don't want to sleep. I want to keep going. Been eating realllllllly healthy (thanks jackie oh!! and Erin Lowe!!!) in order to stay balanced and am exersizing to stay ok. Much to do!

During college I could pull 4 hours a night and be fine for most of the week, then I'd sleep hard on the weekends. However I'm fairly certain I've developed sleep apnea since then, and despite getting 6 to 7 hours or so a night I still spend most of the day deliriously sleepy. If I can catch a 30 minute nap sometime around 4pm then I usually feel alot better, but usually I'm at work so I don't get to. I've been thinking about getting a sleep study done, but the best thing that'll come out of that is getting a CPAP machine, and I've slept with headgear on before, it's no fun, and the prospect of having to wear something like that indefinitely just isn't something I want to deal with right now. The real issue is weight. I'm 30 now and sit at a desk for 8 to 10 hours a day, then come home and sit at another desk, or on the couch...so there's really zero physical activity...anyway enough of that, I just need to start taking better care of my body.

    8 - 9 hours methinks.

But I don't sleep nearly as deeply as I used to, and I have trouble going to sleep.

My dreams are better than ever though.

It seems like sometimes I sleep 5 just fine, sometimes it's 8, and sometimes I sleep 12. Honestly, if I've spent the whole day working, then lifting weights, then playing hockey until midnight, going home and drawing until 3 AM, waking up at 8 AM for martial arts, doing leg presses, playing more hockey... I just seem to crash eventually

I'm jealous of a lot of you... @_@ I have varied sleeping times. I have to MAKE myself stop thinking. If I think constantly, I don't sleep at all. That's more often than I'd like to admit. >_<

When I get "stoopid", I can sleep for any length of time until a noise wakes me up. It's normally abrupt.

I hate sleep so much... >_< And my bedroom. All the best noises are around my bedroom.

Yeah, i know what you mean ( I think) lay in your bed at 1AM, and finally doozle off 3AM, while in the meanwhile you go through the day 200 times in your head. Uch.

I wish there where meds for that. (besides alcohol)

I've been over-tired since summer started (still in high school, on summer break). I'll go to bed at 1 or 2 AM, then pass out at 4, and wake up anywhere between noon and 4:30 PM. I'm getting too much sleep, suffice to say. I need to fix my sleep cycle some how.

I value my sleep above most other things that tend to get cut back in a deadline crunch. I'll cut back meals, social interaction, and entertainment before I cut back sleep. I can't function well on consistently less than 7hrs. my brain just won't cooperate and I make too many mistakes.

same here on the active mind though. Even nights when I'm completely exhausted, I still need to read a book or something to turn my sleep mode on.

Doing year 12. Max of 7 hours a night, and if I get 8 I'm overjoyed. Worst days I only get about 3.

    7 hours

I read somewhere that one sleep cycle is 1.5hrs. So one just need four cycles to get a good night's sleep.

Would anyone know the reason why I wake up every 2 hours or so when I go to sleep? If I were to sleep 8 hours I literally wake up 3-4 times during that process, I guess I may just be a very light sleeper. I also have that active mind problem, takes 2-3 hours to fall asleep. Oh crap, I did not read the post above me, so I guess it IS okay to wake up every 2 hours and go back to sleep.

In high school I had extreme insomnia: go to bed at 4 AM and wake up at 5:30 AM to drive to school (thankfully, I wasn't the one at the steering wheel). 4 yrs of that = bad health probs xx Now I get about 6 (waking up a few times through out) a night, still tired--but proper diet will help with the lack of energy part (not totally, but it makes a difference).

I did this when I was in school as well, there were a lot of times when I didn't sleep at all so by the end of the day I had been up for 36 hours straight, it was pretty gruesome. I don't do that any more though.

I pulled a couple of all nighters while in school, and in the process discovered that by about 24 hours without sleep I start hallucinating pretty heavily. Things change color noticeably. Walls advance and retreat. I see iridescent patterns on things. If I'm tired I also drift in and out of dream states. It will literally be the length of a blink and I'll just be in dreamland...walking along a beach, or in some forest or something...then a little voice will say "Weren't you somewhere else a minute ago?" and I'll jerk awake, usually physically as well as mentally. I've imagined/dreamed whole conversations with people and suddenly woke up confused with the last phrase still on my tongue. When I was younger I used to have problems sleeping, for the reasons people have mentioned, mostly unable to stop my thinking. Nowadays I can fall asleep almost instantly just by closing my eyes and imagining myself doing something else, and typically that's where the dreaming starts. It's like I close my eyes, step back, and am dreaming. I remember a lot of my dreams, but very rarely have had lucid dreams, although I've been thinking about trying to train myself to do it.

Just watched QI and Stephen Fry stated, interestingly, that 4-7 hours is the optimum sleep time for the human body - I'd always thought it was 8 but actually studies (hooray for studies that will prove any fact you want them to lol) people who sleep 8+ a night get sick and die more than those who sleep for 4-7.

(Ok just re-read that and yes I realise that all people can only die once thus nobody can die MORE than anyone else from sleeping too long - I think I meant die younger- doh!)

All I know is that if I sleep too much I am more useless than if I sleep too little - oh and white bread is the devil itself for making you feel lethargic during the day.

    Speaking of sleep...... *yawns*

    Too much.
9 - 11 hours on average (counting from when I go to bed, not actually fallen asleep).

Apparently Leonardo Davinci only took 15 minute naps, every 4 hours or so, and Nicola Tesla slept for 4 hours a day starting from teenage.

Oh wow, I watched that too! I was about to mention it, but I don't need to

When I went to High School, I slept 5-6 hours usually. I felt tired but could work fine. I also have the same problem as others here, as I take sooo long to get to sleep, and I find it so hard to switch off and stop thinking! I can take anywhere up to 4 hours if it's a particularly bad night.
Now that I have finished High School, I have started having uneven sleep patterns. Usually now, I get 10-11 hours O_O I'm not sure what's going on, as I feel more exhausted, so sleep longer, but still feel tired after! I'm going to start setting an alarm again, so I only get about 7 hours a night, and so I'm not getting up at a ridiculous hour (today it was... 3pm! what is wrong with me!) Also means more time in the day too.
I know some people who can fall asleep instantly, I wish I could do that! My boyfriend managed to wake up (not half awake either, he was fully conscious) and he was fast asleep again in less than 1 minute!
