    My Portfolio (French/English Student)

    Hello my name is Sheridan Steven and I have been drawing since I was a child.
    I was raised in France and I did my studies in London.
    I did 1 year of graphic design and 3 years of computer animation.
    I would like to work as an Illustrator or an animator.
    I am currently looking for work in France or anywhere else!

    Wow what a variety of styles! The last one is defenitly my favorite. The first couple of drawings seem to be related to eachother, looks really good. Especially like the picture where he is hanging at some cliff.

    These drawings almost tell a story. I got the feeling that it is about some soldier that has crashed onto some deserted planet, and tries to find life... But thats just me

    Crits: experiment more with the brushes you use in Photoshop, some brushwork in the coloured painting could look better. If you need help with that, just pm me.

    Nice work... I like the one of the man clinging to the rock, and the woman's face the best... the one of Goku and Vegeta is a fun pic too. As for your brushes - it's usually a bad idea to use soft brushes in Photoshop, a hard edged-brush will give you a crisper look and you can always blend colours together during or after if necessary (selecting 'other dynamics' in the brushes palette is a good way to overlay different tones/values).

    By all means I’m no expert, all I know on this subject is from one storyboarding class and one animatic class. My teacher really pushed shot composition and story. I think that some of the shots need some work with shot composition. Your main character might be in the middle of the frame too much. If you add in some OTS (over the shoulder shots) it will eliminate some of that. In some shots you can push in or (crop) so that the top of his head is cut off a little (give him a hair cut). One way you can show your storyboards is to show them with out the descriptions. See if people can read you drawings and get what your story is about. It’s easier to see if some of your shots are awkward or unneeded or if you need to add some shots.
    You do a good job with eyeline (or some call it 180 rule even though 180 only applies with two or less characters. Its better to just call it eyeline.)
    You show movement with arrow for the character but you also show it for the cameras remember lots of people in the pipe line look at storyboards including camera men, directors, animators etc…
    Also I think your format (Aspect ratio) is the wrong size for film, but on the other hand I think it might be different in different country’s.

    This is my opinion you can take it, leave it, or take it with a grain of salt as I said before I’m not a professional storyboard artist I only hope to give you good info.

    Some what of a shot by shot break down critique

    - Combine frame 2 and 3 or take out 2
    - Frame 5 and 6 can be one continuous shot just label it 5a 5b or both 5 with an arrow in between
    - Shot 8 needs a hair cut
    - Shot 12 a little confusing – I’d like to see a different shot. Maybe an OTS or OTH (over the hip shot) looking at the radio or cut out the shot all together it reads well enough with out it.
    - Shot 16 great job!
    - Shot 23 can be a continuous shot from 22 or just omit one. From shot 23-24 you need to add more shots it goes from close up in the middle of a cave to in front of the burning wreckage. It cuts funky I need a little more info there.
    - Love shot 26 show good action and anticipation for an explosion.

    I would re order the following shots
    25, 26, 27,28,29, (take out 30) 31, and 32

    I think its better for your dramatic beats if you put it in this order and the reason I’d do that is every time you push in or get tighter in the shot the more the tension builds up. The way you have it now you break the tension but pull back “its like letting all the air out a balloon.”

    I’d order it
    29,26,25,28,27,31,32

    From shot 32 you should continue to use the Dutch angle

    After that all is well you did a good job storyboarding the rest.

    Hope this helped and hope that it wasn’t too harsh. Also try to get more opinions
