Here is my final entry. Enjoy.
I've been teaching for a while and I've been out of the game. I want to shift back into it with a portfolio of new and exciting work.
This image is essentially a self-portrait in the sense that I need to cut loose from the things in life that keep me safe and take some risks or die trying.
I still intend to finish my spaceman, but I thought I might try to put out some other concepts that might illicit a reaction. No one has commented, so maybe you might comment on this one. It's inspired by Acapulco Cliff Divers.
I haven't decided if I should put in a doctor with a catcher's mitt or perhaps a fishing rod. I was thinking about making it like the kid is coming out because the doctor is holding a Wacom Tablet for him, but that doesn't really make any sense. What do you think?
last one looks good
i think there needs to be more of an environment or something other than a gray background. Even if its just splashes of color, but i think if you explore that area of the drawing you will be headed in the right direction...
just my 2 cents
cool brother, I figured you would but I wanted to just say something just in case.
Cant wait to see it
Strange, I haven't seen your thread before. I thought I browsed them all.
I like your first idea, although nobody will know it's a self-portrait. I can clearly see it's someone who got cut free and is up to a fight, so it's cool.
I like the idea of the first one but the baby umbilical cord jumping grosses me out lol
The spaceman is looking good - maybe you could try a different angle though with some perspective or an angle where we can see the man's face. Or perhaps you could combine the spaceman with the other one and show a large subtly woman-shaped spaceship that the spaceman's umbilical cord has 'broken free' of - like birth and death at the same time.
I like how the spaceman picture is looking.
i have to say, i love that rough drawing up there, the one in red

the spaceman's shaping up pretty well, just one thing, he's falling so i don't think he'd be holding on to his gun so tightly, unless ofcourse he's one of those real men that don't scream/cry.
Does anyone know if the contest is over at 12 midnight CST on the evening of July 30, or on the evening of July 31?
Included below are my progress so far. I have to pick up my kid from pre-school, but I did a quick analysis of my composition. It's kind of hard to stop and start so much on a project. On the upside, having to pause, enabled me to learn some techniques I had not known before.
I made these compositional lines after I made the image. I got lucky on how things lined up and adding these lines after made me feel pretty good about my decision making. I don't do the composition lines first because I don't want to 'stiffen' it up. Doing them after is a nice confirmation of trusting my gut.
On the yin and yang idea, I would say that it had been at the root of my concept for a while and that's why the figure is upside down, but basing the size of the inner circle on the moon and moving the other symbol away towards the head, the concept behind this has been that things have been a little out of balance for me lately and these aspects have crept into the piece. Again, I got lucky on how it lined up with the foot.
The white areas are where text would go if this were to go on the cover. I seem to remember that getting the cover of ImagineFX is one of the prizes. I don't see too many other people leaving big non-contrasty blank areas for text. And I measured out the box after I had placed my guy.
I still intend to go back and add some detail to the suit, but I'm going to give myself the deadline of 9.pm PST tonight to send off my final jpeg. By then, I should be at a point where I'm satisfied with the details.
