    Update 17 January 2010

FightingSeraph - Thank you a lot for the encouragement.
jackpot_anjr90 - I find it easier to draw / paint still life but my anatomy and poses are terrible, they all look stiff and I can’t seem to let it loose. I just hope that practice will make it better.
LtPlissken – Yeah, always working on anatomy. I really enjoyed coloring that drawing .

Here are some 2-3 minutes sketches for random characters from imagination:

These ideas just came to my mind one night and i really like em:

    A landscape:

Very nice job. Great effort and improvement along the way. Keep on working on referenced studies and imagination-only stuff, thats the way.
Oh, and thanks for voting me on character of the week 186, I appreciate it.

    Update 1 February 2010

    Hello everyone,

Bah, I had some tech issues with my laptop again and could not use it for the past 2 weeks. Updating now.

I'm trying to work on the creativity / imagination aspect more. Here is my try at interpretation. I had chosen a subject with only a few known details.

You've definitely improved a lot on your poses. If you're still going to posemaniacs to practice, I would suggest cutting the time down that you spend on poses and draw out the gestures as quickly as you can. That would probably help out in giving your poses more life. I hope this helps you out some. Just be sure to keep up the studies and keep posting.

You are doing just fine. This Egther guy looks great. Do not mind about the slow work process, we are not in a hurry here. After time you will get a faster pace, but that is not the primary aspect of painting, to be fast. Glad that you fixed your laptop and that you are back in the business now.

    Update 18 February 2010

    Hello all,

LtPlissken - Yeah, I know, I am not usually hurrying. Is just that right now, Iím more like hurrying to make progress overall. I just think that Iím stuck and canít improve, especially now, as I have such little time to do it .

Anyways, while my laptop was in service I have done some watercolor stuffÖwell actually trying to remember how to use watercolors. The last one is in progress right now, at the time I made the photos it was just a drawing. I will update when it's done.
Sorry about the bad quality of the images. The chick looks like she has milk on her face in this image although in reality it doesn't look like it. Eh, anyway, here they are.

Chick with milk on her face:

    Nostalgia from childhood I suppose:

In progres...little beings life I guess...I think I like drawing silly childish stuff

I will follow you from now on since imo you are improving quite fast and you are trying out different techniques.
I don't know what you are doing for living but I want you to succedd at being awesome artist that lives from art in all the aspects of "living"

Anyway, sometimes you have amazing art really far better than some other art of yours.
I think you have to study alot more anatomy, positioning, all those little details, because when drawing from head, there is still not enough experience so you could make art from your head close to the art you do when watching photos, still life or tutorials from Loomis and others.
I'll tell you something I've noticed some time before. When drawing from photos. The parts that I'm focused on are mainly drawn good, and then when I need to draw something like, let's say brow, there is some kind of stupid thinking in my head that appears fast and says, "oh I know how to draw that" and faster than I realize, brown is drawn from my head.. and you know what ? It looks so wrong on picture Mispositioned mostly. Those moments happen to me sometimes, lately not so often and I'm glad because of that, I'm becoming more disciplined.

Anyway, jump sometimes to my sketchbook

Deceive me out of my emptiness

Sweron Thank you a lot for the encouragements. I too wish to become an awesome artist and live from it . What I do now for a living is playing games! Haha I love saying it..especially as people usually think that being a QC game tester means only playing games for the fun of it , when in fact itís so much hard workÖduring the last big project that lasted for about 3-4 months I barely had time to sleep, so drawing was out of the question. But, yeah, I love my job, mostly because itís in the game industry and I would probably love any type of job in the game industry. Itís been quite a while since I figured that game industry is where I picture myself working my entire life. So, even if itís QC for now, maybe later, who knows, something art related will come along. I hope so!

You are so right about anatomy, I should get back to study it, especially now as I have more free time, and mostly I need to figure out structure of the body, because I have so much trouble with that. I donít know right now how to make it easier for understanding. I know in theory I have to create basic shapes out of the human body, but in practice it feels so much harder.

I work a lot with reference because I still have a lot to learn until I can put on paper some idea from head with the proper anatomy, structure and lighting. I know about the times when you feel something looks in a particular way and when you draw it itís so wrong and thatís mostly because thatís the information you have in the brain about specific things. I think variation and a lot of study can fix that in time.

Anyway, here is the finished character I started last week. Well, as finished as it can get, I donít feel like working on it anymore.

Making money for testing games? wow, that sounds so amazing. Do you earn a lot by doing that?

I like your character design orientation lately. It is going quite well. The hand, her right hand as she is holding her weapon is just so unnatural. I altered a little bit your color combination and increased the contrast, I hope you do not mind.
Keep working, there is a bright future ahead....

    Update 04.03.2010

    Hello everyone,

LtPlissken - Not so much money , itís good that I donít have to worry about paying rent or such, else I doubt I could handle it financially. For me, itís decent right now. But, anyway, I donít really care about the money, if I work in a domain I enjoy, itís good enough. I rather be happy at work with less money than miserable with loads of cash

On the character, you are right about the hand, it was messed form start and I tried fixing it a couple of times but it just got worse, so I let it be.
I donít mind at all about your version, it helps to see it in a different way.

I decided I need to clean up my work because generally I work so messy and the details usually look bad. So here is a test of this. I must say, my hand hurts, I feel I have put much more effort into this than any other. Plus I hope I finish it by Saturday since itís my birthday and exactly 1 year since I got the tablet and I want to feel like I have achieved something during this time.

    Update 11 March 2010

    Hello everyone,

Here is some update for the last week:
    - more drawing (as I realized I didn't draw that much lately);
    - experimenting with colored / watercolor pencils;
    - finished the digital girl started last week (even though there is clearly much to work on every aspect, I think it suffices the purpose it was created: a test for a clean look)

I apologize for the really bad quality of the images, I don't have a scanner anymore so I have to use the photo camera for now.

Really nice work. Anatomy has improves since last year. Lots!
I think some male studies would help a lot. If you keep doing female anatomy, you may find it difficult later on to transition away from it.

    Keep it up.

LtPlissken - Thank you! My hand hurts after finishing this I feel that I put a lot of work into it.
a_mckeown - Thank you for the heads up about the male anatomy. You are so right, I keep telling myself that once I master female anatomy I will move to male, but it might be too late then hehe.

Here is a small update with random, quick, unfinished and messy stuff .
But! I am starting a new digital that I plan to take to the end and finish all the details, with the subject - winter something, snowing, ice queen maybe, I don't know, it's just in my head for now, no sketches yet, I will update as soon as I start it.
I have also continued with the anatomy drawing, will update that at the end of the week when I'll have the photo camera available.

I have no idea why I started this , I had this plan for a religious figure but it didn't turned out as I wanted:

    Name: byz.jpg
Views: 115
Size: 54.7 KB

    Some unfinished insect:

    Name: insect.jpg
Views: 116
Size: 121.8 KB

Another failed try at a selfportrait, I really don't think I will ever be able to do this , especially not from a photo ref:

    Name: selfportrait.jpg
Views: 111
Size: 43.4 KB

This started just as random as it can be, as a test for basic face creation:

    Name: test.jpg
Views: 114
Size: 43.5 KB

Then I decided to turn it into a full character (I will continue and finish this later because I feel it can develop good enough):

    Name: 8.jpg
Views: 122
Size: 25.8 KB

    Update 17 March 2010

And here is the winter digital I just started. I hope I'll be able to finish all the details.

    The initial idea:

    Name: 1winter.jpg
Views: 112
Size: 40.6 KB

    Some shading and sketches:

    Name: 2winter.jpg
Views: 125
Size: 56.3 KB

    Name: 3winter.jpg
Views: 119
Size: 76.7 KB

    Name: 4winter.jpg
Views: 110
Size: 84.3 KB

    Basic block in:

    Name: 5winter.jpg
Views: 118
Size: 104.9 KB

This is where I am with it right now, I will update as soon as I advance.

I see that you have improved, but you may want to variate the subjects more.

Hello, my great friend! I am happy that you have updated. You see, I think that you are still afraid to paint. You are handling those values, shadows, colors so soft and nice.... I would suggest that you lay out all your power on your paintings, get some dark shadows on those faces, go a level darker on that religious character.
If you work in Photoshop, try duplicating you layer at certain level and putting it to multiply, so you can increase the transparency of that layer if it is too dark, but it will be stronger values for sure than they are now. Just try it.
Oh, this last one, this winter digital looks like it will be some real serious project. I look forward to see it.
Good luck in your further work, I am following you all the time....
you know ... I have an eYe in the sky...

FightingSeraph - Yes, I know I need to vary my subjects, I just tend to stick to what I know best sadly . I will try to follow your advice from now on.

LtPlissken - You are right. I am afraid to paint and it will not change anytime soon I believe . I think I need a lot more experience and work done so I can feel confident enough to paint as I feel and stop thinking every brush stroke I make. Ah, and thank you for the layer multiply tip, I usually just paint with a normal round brush and no other PS "tricks", I might start experiencing with them.

Here are some drawings from the past week + an update on the winter digital which I might abandon as I don't have much interest in it anymore, basically because I don't like the way it develops. I don't even know how to blend the character into the scene. If anyone has any tips about atmospheric or aerial perspective please share it. I've read about it but I feel I need more practical help . Bleh, I might focus on this for a while, and color theory.

Twan - Thank you a lot for the encouragement.

I don't think I ever mentioned my other passion besides Art :

It's not my bike though, only the passenger seat is mine hehe. With my bike ...it's a long story
And spring is here hooray! This means a lot of bike riding trips

But pff, I dont know what's wrong with me, I don't feel like doing anything anymore...don't feel like drawing, going out, playing games...nothing . I don't know really, maybe it's a spring depression or something. I need to find some motivation quick.

It is clearly visible that you do those paintings much better in which you find yourself and your passion, than the ones where you are not so interested in the subject and where you are not sure about the meaning and the point of the situation.
For example, that lady beside the stoves, cooking something looks too loose as you said and you are just not sure how to color it and where to go from this point. On the other hand this motorcycle character is much much more stronger and you know exactly what you are doing and you have put a lot of yourself in the painting.
I hope you understand at least a bit of my confused sentences.
Looking these facts that I mentioned above, maybe you should do much more paintings of the subjects that you really enjoy and love in life, so your learning process will improve tremendously and with all that, drawing and painting the things that you really like will attract you more and will make you to do more paintings overall. Learning good the basics of your current favored things will transfer easily at any time to another world of subjects that you maybe do not sympathize at this point.

LtPlissken - Thank you a lot. I think you are perfectly right and what I really need right now is to focus on what I like to draw and paint, maybe that's why I lost interest and motivation because I kept trying to use different subjects for variety, which i didn't enjoy as much. And as you said, maybe when I am really good at drawing what I like I will find it easier to use other subjects I don't really enjoy now.
Thank you again! It really changed my awful mood I've been having the past week .
