I got my dad the below book. I've been reading it lately and decided to buy another, for him; he's also painter.

It is a GREAT book by the way. I highly recommend reading it

That's an excellent book, definitely recommend it. Get it from his website though, not an overpriced Amazon reseller.

I got my dad nothing. He's a fuckwit.

Kag, it's a cracking good book. Bit fiddly to get in the UK but I guarantee you wouldn't regret getting a copy.

It's worth it for the "Things that I have personally fucked up that made my painting suck" checklist alone...

There are also lots of masterful paintings with great advice. Sweet book.

Edit: It's one of those things that you should ostensibly buy for him, then just nick it.

I gave my dad Avoidance (he lives in another town).

He has threatened to cut myself and my brother on sight.

I don't feel like going to jail for murder. There are cousins I don't need to see.

I got my dad a range of small paintbrushes (2/0, 4/0, 2) and various brands to see what he likes. He says he's going through them like a fat man eating popcorn.

Yeah, his checklist of "things i think of when im starting a painting" is golden. I think it's something like "what direction is lighting coming from? is the light warm/cool, are the shadows warm/cool, what might look weird if painted how i see it... etc." a great set of guidelines, and many many more bits of good info. I highly reccomend it.

    Aww, how nice.

I gave my dad a handmade card, which I'll scan in my computer in a sec so you can see.

It's his Birthday tomorrow as well though.

I sat quietly for an hour or so last night and remembered my dad, and asked his advice on some things that have been at loose ends here lately...I started laughing to myself when I realized he'd be turning 100 this month if he were still alive.
