AlexTooth - Thank you! There will be a lot more!

Dina2342 - Thank you, you are right! There was no intention what so ever behind my portrait.
And usually my portraits don't have an intention...and my mind goes blank a lot of times when I try
to create a character. Will try harder to think of stories and see what happens to the way the portrait
    will look. Thanks again!

    More figure studies!
Poor portraits, I know, will have to try harder!

nice to see you find more time for studying, I do believe that even if its just a hobby its should be fulfilling and rewarding and to get there lots of practice is needed.

Wow! I really love your sketch book. The studies are awesome! I hope my sketch book looks like this one day. I especially like your gesture drawings on the last page.

Erm.. I came here to give CnC since you so kindly posted in my sketchbook, but uh.. I don't think I'm even nearly close enough to your level to say anything here without sounding like a prick.. So.. I'll be back in.. A year, I guess? D:
I realize my profile picture sucks. I will put on a better one when I make/get given a better one. I don't want to use a Google profile pic.

Ha . You said I'm doing hard work, this sketchbook is crazy. Got to give it a better look but for now when you put your figures in perspective make sure that the torso box and the pelvis box align properly. For example in that lying pose the torso and pelvis should be on the same line that goes to the left.
Good luck! See you next year.

    hey Christina!
starting on those value master studies too huh?
a great start too, though maybe a little too much hard brush. but that's more of a secondary concern.

step 1 should be getting your shapes right,
step 2 getting the values right- you're pretty close there.
step 3 getting the edgework right.

so, focusing on step one, maybe use a grid to double-check your work.

the first piece, the overall head seems to be in the right place, but the features seem to be distorted. the nose is too big, leaving too little space for the mouth and chin.
in the second, the whole head is too big, upsetting the overall composition.

well, I think you did a great job at gauging the values, but now you need to make some transitions ofc. control-paint has some great tutorials about that.
lol; I've been linking this all over the place, but it helped me a lot... and I think it could be great for you too.

ashess - awesome! i completly forgot about ctrl paint! though it is such an awesome site; and you are completely right, i should do more rendering studies; also, from the last time i painted (that being month ago) i forgot i used to vary edges more and paint with soft brushes too xD thanks ashess!

Here is today's master study. 1.5h
I'd work some more on it but no more time. Exam tomorrow.

I studied the composition and flow first, then blocked in the big shapes.
Then added the rest on top.

The balance of the painting is very good, and I see some flow repetition (green lines).
Also, the eyes of the viewer are directed to where the girl is looking at, and I saw the position of the hands indicating that direction as well.

oh wow so much better Chris! now, you're gonna notice yours doesn't looks as pretty as the original. it's in the details. like the suggestion of a chin in the original. breaking the lower line of the jaw that yours misses. the hairline being off just a little. the top of the head fading away right.

not sure if you need to fix that, but I found it interesting.

Hey, nice sketchbook... 45 pages ! i'm admiring your motivation
Anyway if i can say one think: Maybe try to be more confident with your brush stroke. You tend to make 10 line when you need 1. If you can be a little more efficient, it will improve your quality.

    Keep it up !

I wanted to give the swan study a better environment, so i looked up some foliage and water lilies.
Roughly painted, perhaps I will come back later and refine the water lilies.

Material and value study, done in paint tool Sai, and then in photoshop. I gave it a try but i don't really like Sai.
And also took a still life drawn by Selenada on dA and analysed its values and composition.

    I feel like I learned.

Trying to apply what I learned from studying the values on the still life from the previous post.
I learned that the brain can be deceiving, particularly with yellows that i thought were greens xD

So this is a still life from real life found on my drawing desk. It was nice playing with the yellows
on the apple and the greens from the bowl. Still have a long way to go with making it look real..

And the spheres were my attempt at making color pallets and applying them to a sphere.
I wanted to really think about color temperature, value and saturation.

ps. i hate drawing bowls, particularly from this angle..no matter how much i construct, it always looks wrong

Hi Cristina, I left the best comment ever last time and it got deleted during the site maintenance unfortunately . If I remember correctly you asked about how to come up with ideas for costume designs. Here's a handy tutorial on that topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYbvxsvkZ9A
You might want to save the video since this guy removes some of his tutorials every now and then. Hope it helps.
