    Chibi!

Well, this is change of pace! Busting my ass working on my illustration portfolio, so this is the most recent sketch from the mill. Far from finished, but the bones are there.

    Meanwhile...

Here are the designs i submitted for Semipermanent 2010, an annual Australian design conference. The middle piece was selected and will be published in their book.

They're compiled ink pieces over my photography which I assembled in Photoshop to form a coherent image, lighting, colouring and whatnot.

The inks are impressive as always [insert obligatory request for moooore XD] and I was pleasantly surprised by the digital work too; so much of it looks stiff other places but yours, especially the recent pieces, has a similar freshness to your inks. Looking at your mysterious black headed man it did seem like he would have benefited from working into the negative space though. In some of your older inks, the recent ones as well but slightly less so, you continued the rhythms from the figure when you moved into creating atmosphere and it struck me that it would enhance the dynamism of the poses you created. But, I also thought the stark black on white created a mood in the pieces that really complimented the presentation of the figure through ordered chaos so I'm torn between the two immediate reactions to the most recent ink work. Gah XD, I don't know any more. It's all great, keep it up!
Oh, I was also curious as to how you approach your work in ink. Are you enhancing the interesting elements of references you find to create the somewhat abstracted forms that have emerged recently or are you working from imagination/memory. Also, I'd be very interested to find out what you're using to create your line; in some places it has the regularity of a technical pen but in others it takes on a brush like quality
I have nothing interesting to say but here's my sketchbook, perhaps you'll think I've drawn something interesting XD http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=167964

Much appreciate the compliments, i've been a bit quiet of late, struggling with the business side of this art business, but hopefully I'll have more work to post soon.

My ink work is hardly ever based on a direct element of reference, but rather any one of a hundred images i may have seen in books or in nature. The important thing is to perpetuatethe choas around us through irregular linework, that serves as the basis and detail can follow later, otherwise your work will just tighten up and be lifeless.

That said, all artist's techniques and visuals have in one way or another been taken from something they've seen, it's simply the application and the scope of their source material that sets some apart.

As far as tools go, i use two pens for my ink work, the one is a Pilot V5, a great workhorse i've been using non-stop for a decade, always have one in your pocket. The other one is a dipping pen, i have dozens of different nibs, but i only use on type, it has a fine point and a reservoir, but it's tough enough to handle more pressure to give me a broader line. I have quite a few, but they don't tend to need replacing very often. Just keep them clean and they'll be fine. I use Indian ink, got a great brand named Pebeo which is versatile as hell and waterproof after drying, so you can layer it as much as you like.

I also use brushed on occasion, generally dry brush for a more dynamic, bristly effect.

Hope this isn't too much information.

Kidult: Thank for the good word. I tend to move pretty fast and these sketches were just to stay loose, so i'll probably be posting more unfinished work in the future, but that's because I'm also busy finishing other work elsewhere. Go have a look at my blog for some of those pieces. (this is after all a sketchbook! hehe)

lol, there's no such thing as too much information I shall proceed to demonstrate the veracity of this statement by requesting more
Is there any kind of paper which you find stands up well to ink? I've noticed that it can be fairly abusive so most of the stuff I've tried with ink has been on heavy paper. I cant discern any of the texture you'd expect from rag paper or watercolour paper or something like that in the images of your work. Is there any favourite that you have?
