I very much enjoy your combination of photography and pencils in the latest posts.
It's nice to see some variation in sketchbooks.

What does disturb me, though. Are the huge copyrights in every picture. they are somewhat of a thorn in my eye while watching your work. I would suggest making them a bit smaller.

    Anyways, keep it up

In with the Old, Out with the New

I had the painting below framed for a buyer and incidentally had the ink piece below returned to me on the same day, which was a pleasant suprise. The ink drawing was part of my solo debut in 2008 and it's great having such a nicely framed piece back in the house. We hardly have any ink work on the walls, because oil paintings can by hung as-is, whereas drawings need to be mounted or framed, which itsn't cheap! It's cool being able to share it. All the other ink works from that exhibition can be seen at the Robertson Small Hotel in, well, Robertson. Nice little place.
Thanks to Framed Master Gilders and Framers in Woodstock. They did the framing on both pieces and as usual, they did an awesome job!

    Good news, Bad news.

Well, the good news is that I just got back from an unbelievable trip through Botswana and got some neat photos to show you guys. The bad news is that upon getting home, I found we'd been robbed and my ancient-yet-hardy Graphire2 which I had been running into the ground for the past eight years had been accidentally stolen. Accidentally because the fuckers took my backpack to put the swag in(they always do) and my poor little Wacom happened to be in said bag. Well, after some mild deadline panic (Wacoms are not exaclty a common retail item in South Africa) I managed to procure a brand spanking new Intuos4 and things are looking up, because its freeing up my work a lot, so apparently all's well that ends well. So here's one of the first scribbles, very quick, but time's a-pressing, so there's real work to be done!

But stay tuned, I'll be sharing some good shots with you guys soon enough.

    H!

    Back on the horse.

I've been chasing some tight deadlines of late, so hopefully I'll be able to post more consistently in the near future!

Here's another quick scribble on the new Intuos in the meantime. Still loving this new tool.

And another Antwoord shot form Ramfest from before I got booted offstage, but that's a whole other story.

I like how you just put the ink on the page and let it express itself. Also interesting photographs. What's there purpose?

    Connecting.

Comic artwork is something I approach with extreme caution, mainly because I have so much respect for it. In fact it is probably the only medium I am terrified of fucking up, which may explain why it has taken me fifteen years to get to the point of production(and I'm still not there!). It was, however, the single biggest contributing factor in starting me along this career path, so it only makes sense that I pursue it to the point of proficiency.

So watch this space and give me hell if I screw it up.

    About the Photo:

We were visiting my grandfather in Kimberley and Shanna's morning Skype session home ended up with all the family members present meeting and chatting to her dad in Sydney. This was a cool example of technology opening doors and giving a little more context socially to people worlds apart.

    Thanks, man!

Many, MANY years of practice using only ink pens taught me to think on my feet. Abandoning pencils for about a decade makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

(I just started using pencils again recently for comics and illustration work. For most other drawing I just go straight in.)

IDDI and RICARDO, thanks for the good word.

    No Rest. For the Wicked.

I was approached to do a cover illustration for the upcoming issue of Something Wicked Magazine, which has been resurrected as an online publication. The artwork accompanies a great short story The Treasons by AA Garrison featured inside. Well, the deadline was reached by the seat of the proverbial pants, although that tends to be the nature of the game, so here it is.

Do check it out and support the Mag, it's well worth a few bucks!

Here's a set of development sketches leading up to the finished cover.

    Different kinds of ink.

More clumsy inking, this looks much better WITH the pencils in there, but that's not really the point.
