    Dante's Inferno character...criticism needed! :)

Hi there everyone, this is my first time posting something that I've done....so here goes. This was for an assignment for art class....we also had to make a 3D model from our original concept art. Mine was taken from Dante's Inferno....from the 'wood of suicides.' Basically it's pencil/pen and Photoshop.

Please let me know what you think.

    Thank you!

needs a lot more contrast, that is black and shading.

    Looks good.

If it were me, I'd try and push the "human" characteristics a bit more. Right now it just looks like a tree-monster--there's not much indication of its human component. Also, I'm not sure what the spikes are there for--were they in Dante's original poem?

Thanks, I wanted to try and make it a little more human but wasn't sure exactly how to go about it...makes me want to try again though..

The spikes were meant to represent thorns; in the book, they are described as poison thorns...although they probably should've been longer and more thorn-like but when I sculpted it it was really difficult to keep them pointy...sigh.

I love Dante's Inferno! I read large chuncks of it in high school; amazing (if not incredibly eerie) poem.

I agree on the possibility of more contrast or values. Shading those curves that cover the tree surface would really make it pop out. It would also add a lot of texture. As for the thorns... they're poison thorns? If you're sculpting it, and length becomes and issue, try painting the thorns black or some other darkish color.

I really want to see the finished sculpture when its done.
