    Talking Criticism and Advice

    Hi all.

    I'm learning digital painting with photoshop, and I'm starting with some portraits. I'd like your comments, criticism and advices.

    The first thing that pops out at me is that all your edges are extremely soft. This makes it look airbrushed and sucks life out of the picture. In certain places, such as the shadows cast by the nose or the shadow cast by the chin, you'll want to have a sharp edge. Some of your outlines, too, are blurred out without logic, like Howard's left shoulder. Your cloth and hair look sort of flat as well, as they're not wrapping around the forms that are supposed to be there. I suggest using references for that.

    To prevent the softness of brushes, in the brush preferences pane increase the Hardness. I usually work with 100% hardness. Don't hesitate to press hard on the pen to have maximum opacity. Once you have the general colors and shapes you can always blend by pressing less hard and making the intermediary colors.
