    Don Seegmiller's book

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you guys know about Don Seegmiller's book . It covers everything from basic character design, what works what doesnt, what to do and what not to do. It's the first book Ive ever seen dedicate the first five chapters to character design.

The juciy part of the book is where it shows you how to take full advantage of painter, and paint digitally. how to use papers, brushes, etc... It comes with a cd that has brushes, papers, textures, videos, and lessons.

The very first lesson is to paint a tree, and maybe you're thinking, a tree? Yeah, cuz its not that hard, but the way he shows you makes it really enjoyable, and you learn a lot.

    Here's the tree I painted

I'm not much of a digital painter, but this book helps out a lot.

Just wanted to let everyone know!

    I hate the book!
Because I can't afford buying it and the tutorial section is down (because it exists)
    (j/k)

Some of the tutorials are still up.
I guess they are good as teasers!?

    hey inky

don's book certainly isn't bad. but honestly, i think it is aimed at people that aren't as far on the road as you are.
of course, its interesting to read what he writes about character design, but to me, it appeared to be more an entrance to the world of creating own characters instead of using painters clone feature to overpaint photos.

a book about how to convey subconcious messages in design and all the concept design fields in general would be interesting i think... chapters about characters, environments, vehicles, props, etcetera... how to give lifeless things character, what drawing style to choose best, symbolic data source, data mining and so on.

I really enjoyed the book. It taught me alot, and has some very good info in it that I haven't even seen in any tutorials for free on the net.

I'm seriously thinking about takign some of his classes at BYU if I can ever get into them. Even though it is a pretty long drive...

Yeah, you're right about this, it does do that a lot, that section does seem to be aimed at beginners a lot.

I do like his explanations of techniques and such. I learned so much form them.

    Thanks for posting this I.was.Ink!
(is there anything shorter I can call you?)

I was just wondering what the best place to start for learning painter was as well! Thanks buddy! :chug:

    Have fun,
    Dave (The Original)

PS. I'd recommend the following art of books:

*art of Lord of the rings (all of them)
*art of Star Wars 1 & 2 (not a fan of the films, but the art can't be faulted!)
    *art of the matrix.

Just got them for Christmas, they are VERY inspiring!
