    dumb art puns

So I frequent this (the ultimate art site) along with the usual boring ones and a few special ones tucked away on the internets... and occasionally see someone refer to a drawing/painting (or a digital copy of one) as a "piece".

Where does this originate? From the phrase 'a "piece" of art'?

The easy (dumb) pun would be to say a piece of s***, but that's not what I'm saying.

A piece is part of a larger whole. So, if we gather up all the pieces, we should have a whole--something.

I guess the word "piece" just tricks me out... and it always seems weird when someone refers to some drawing or painting as a "piece".

    Just a dumb musing, maybe.

a 'piece' of art is an individual and specific work of art that is part of a body of work.

Hm. I guess it's just that simple. Thank you.

Don't know if it will ever not seem strange to hear that word in that way, though.

Piece is the easiest term to use to cover just about any form of art. Whether it's a painting or a drawing, a sculpture or a 3d model, you can call it a piece. It's handy when you're lazy, or when you're dealing with pieces (there, I used it) that aren't specifically drawings or paintings (or any other particular media).

There once was a poor artist from Tunis.
Who wanted to make Art of his New Miss.
But he traded his art books for bread
To buy dinner for her and then said,
May I take you to bed in the Loomis?

A post modern artist walks into a bar. He orders a drink and spends the next several hours chatting with friends. At the end of the night, he calls a cab for a ride home.

Your backstreet pimp drawing is showing good values, and an excellent use of image ho'ze and the way you worked up the gessoe on her face.

Grief has a wonderful sense of huemor, he always seems to be in rare form. When ever a thread has a sour tone, you can count on him for comic relief.

Grief and BuckWeisel... Frieze! Pallette around somewhere else, Dod Gamut. Like a round your flat. You're brush with harmony is making me bristle with edginess. Soon you'll be Liquin each other's busts. Turpennoying!
