Seeing you play more with edges its great mate. I see the improvement while checking your sb after all these months. Guys gave nice feedback. And keep in your mind that color actually seems to have dimension. So use the saturation of color as a measure of near-far, and usually i see near= more saturation far=less saturation (thats why edges[areas facing away from the eye] seem to have desaturated/blueish/more grey hue)

improvement is obvious, just keep up the great work

Hi vatsel, with the latest portrait I would suggest trying to think of a certain mood or feeling you wish to convey and then be ruthless to the image... It wants to look boring and it wants to look bad. You need to forcefully not allow it to be! More variety in the hues values and saturation will make it more dynamic
Find images you think are dynamic, think about why you feel that way about them and how you can come closer to achieveing that. Look at photography and see how they lit the face and the cool cast shadow shapes. Use reference to help you make the image you see in your head. Using reference well takes practice, it's very easy to start painting the reference and not the image in your head.

Find reference for make up, think about who she is, how do you inject that image in your mind onto the screen?

    Just some thoughts

There's some serious knowledge sharing going on in this thread now!
Many thanks mates, I'm noting all and will use it to improve.

Right, as it has become clear, I shouldn't have really tried to make that face study into an actual piece. It wasn't painted with a gesture to begin with, and I just got lazy and wanted to whip out a quick finished work for the portfolio.

Learning my lesson and moving on, hopefully I will use all the things you lot wrote down on this next piece I've got cookin'.
It's still very rough. The lines took me ages and will probably will have to be retouched as I progress with shading.

My construction is still lame and is holding me back. After this piece you might see less of me as I'd like to get back to more pencils for a while.

She be sagging, someone get her a push up bra or something. That upper arm is away long as well. Mix up the colours a bit as well man, this seems like pretty much the same stuff as that last portrait, same features, same hair, even got a blue bg.

Look forward to more in the future then! I think the small amount of yellow will add some good contrast. Maybe try making a scene? Give her a location.

huge step up on this one http://vatsel.com/permgallery/2012/may/scissors.jpg
I love the light and the colors, it makes for a nice mood.

It still feels to me like your painting resolution might be a little low, but that might just be me.

For the last one you could try warming up the colors in the shadows around the hands and fingers and under the chin where the light would bounce around and get progressively warmer from bouncing off the skin.

I think you need to lay off the porn for a bit Mark, drawing pretty woman is one thing, but having a naked woman thrusting her crotch in the direction of a guy creeping towards her is quite another!

The portrait is a nice step forward, it's far more dynamic that the last few and she has much more attitude/emotion in her face. Your values are great as well but you're still playing it very safe with the skin tones. More reds in the cheeks and lips, tiny touch more yellow in the forehead etc anything you can do the give it some form and some fleshiness. Let's keep that hair nice and flowy and suggestive as well!

    Take it easy.

Am really not sure if I'm even taking the portrait in the right direction anymore... tried to go for a pale face + bright lipstick contrast and I think I've sharpened too many edges.

    Here are some WIPs:
