    "icons" in game art

This might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if there is a specific term for the little 'icons' used in some games. It's hard to explain what I mean without some examples. Best I can come up with atm is the skill illustrations in Heroes of Might and Magic. (Examples) and these badges for the Whirled game "Wyvern". (see attachment)

These small images are always made in a distinct illustration style, which really appeals to me, most often more than the game art itself.
I guess it's the rendering and the use of colour, combined with the black outline.

There might not be a term for these. I'm just curious.
Anyone else has some great examples?

^A stupid question is a question which is not asked.

If you like this kind of illustration for icons, you should check windows icons collection called GANT (1,2,3).

If you like *doing* that kind of art, and menus also, look into UI (user interface) art. Not a lot of people want to do that type of art so it's a good field to get into - easier to find and keep jobs and they'll often pay quite well to make up for it not being as glamorous as concept.

@egerie: yes! that's what I'm talking about! those are really great. wouldn't want them on my desktop though...

@zaorr: not exactly. well, it's the same things but i was looking for a different style really.

@nonie: well i have been thinking about it. i can't make games myself, and i doubt i'd be a good concept artist at my level - but most of the time i get swept away by the UI art of a game rather than by the story the game tells. so yeah, maybe i should look into that for a 'living' - you sure make it sound like an interesting gamble.

i guess it's really the flat outline combined with a very heavy highlighting in vibrant colors that make these little icons etc. so appealing. god i can stare at that HOMM5 site all day!

any other good examples, references, tutorials or artists - welcome!

yep..a UI artist who can do entire interface design and all those icons is invaluable to a team. I wish there were more of those peeps out there. It is an art as it has to be incredibly smart and organized and easy to use..and the ability to paint, surface, and do graphic design are the basics of it.

just painting icons...that will limit you to the mmo and rpg companies and even then you will need to have more skills as you will run out of icons to do...unless you can corral in all the icon jobs.
