    Kotobuki Shirou

I've wanted to start a thread about this artist for a long time, and now seems to be the best time for it. Lately more than ever I've been seeing threads about "inspiration", "I'm too old" or even "I have no talent", and I believe the story of this artist will put an end to these threads and help everybody who has doubts.

Kotobuki Shirou is an illustrator and concept artist. He is also a quadriplegic (only can move from neck up) as a result of a motorcycle accident. However, the only reason he took up drawing was at the insistence of his rehabilitation doctor who never gave up on him.

"When you get hurt like this the normal procedure is for the rehabilitative doctors to force you to draw, and they won't take no for an answer. One day, the Doctor and I had a discussion where I told him that I wouldn't draw, unless they were pretty women. The next day the doctor brought me playboy magazine, and I thought "This, I have to draw!"

And he has been drawing ever since, he has never given up, until succeeded - he has done concept art for games such as Rumble Roses. So whatever you think your problems are, no matter how "late" you start, "lack" of talent or your physical condition - you CAN succeed.

Good to see that at least someone is using his (defunct?) penis for something productive.

Meh, not really. I'm just saying (in an apparently needlessly complicated way) that it's good to see people using their sex drive for something productive since, usually, a man's penis causes said person to act like a complete jack-ass.

In any case, hats off to the fellow for the effort.

EDIT: Oh, and just to make it crystal clear - this person is using his sexual drive (and if there's something else that makes a man draw sexy HS girls, let me know) better than most other people on the planet.

That doesn't make any sense in context or out of context.

Before you continue to flame the hell out of me, mind explaining what you interpreted as so offensive from that post?

Ya' know, I'm pretty aware I just botched the social roll but I'd at least like to know what was the message that got to the other end.

yeah ive read about this guy before, he is kick ass , a real inspiration.

a bit off topic, but why do people make posts about artists in the lounge rather than art discussions? Isnt it that the lounge is for anything off topic, and art discussions is about general talk about art and artists. Id like to see some stuff posted in there that isnt a noob asking if they can make it or how to improve.....

    @CallOps-
Thank you for posting this. I will point others to this post. I have absolutely no problems. I wish I could understand what he is saying in the vid. I hope to meet each day with that level of determination. Cheers!

I don't know how it came across to others, but to me it came across as "LOL let's mock the fact that he's paralyzed and totally ignore his accomplishment in becoming a concept artist despite the fact that he has to draw with his MOUTH because he can't use any other part of his body." There might be some more LOLs thrown in there randomly, IDK.

I'm not trying to be mean, and I get what you're trying to say from your subsequent posts, but that was my initial reaction to your post. Sorry :/

Is there a special reason why his tablet seems as if it's covered in plastic? Does it protect your brush tips better? Or does it keep the tablet in better condition.

I generally don't go into user banning mode until I start seeing people report other users while I'm trying to clean out spam bots. It wasn't just this post that caused the hammer though. I just think he needs a month off.

Interesting technique with using the smudge brush (?) to nudge sketch lines. His lines seems quite to the point, which is amazing given the size of the tablet and length of the pen. He's also quite economical.

Perhaps it's a surface friction thing?

Wow.. just wow. I can't even begin to touch that kind of precision and skill using my hands, and hes using his mouth to move a pen thats nearly two feet away from him, controlling it through the use of a long pole O.o That just really proves that there really is no limit to what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.
