    Question Crazy Norwegian Tradition: Russ

    Good morning everyone.
Just woke up with the most incredible hangover. I spent last night binge-drinking in a pimped out bus with my mates.
The bus has blue neonlights everywhere on the inside, an HD-TV with a PS3 hooked up to it, an insane sound-system usually used for outdoor-concerts and a blue penis painted on the wall.
The outside of the bus is decorated with around ten white penises over the colours of the norwegian flag.

What the hell is going on, you say?

    It's Russ.

Russ is a norwegian tradition for kids who are graduating from high school. It has been ranked among the craziest parties in the world, right up there with the carnevale in Rio.
Shortly put, the tradition consists of everyone dressing in red overalls and then drinking continuously for a month. Of course, the drinking brings with it what you would expect; Huge brawls, loud music, orgies, and then sexual deseases. There are also certain "knots" you can earn by achieving various rediculous feats. Like drinking a whole pint while you're taking a piss.
Kids who are Russ usually have some means of transportation, like vans, bikes or buses. Prior to the festivities these vehicles are pimped out with for example custom paint, sound systems, lights, screens, bars, pillows etc.

You can read much more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ

Since me and the folks on my bus started celebrating, exactly one week ago, we've been in four brawls, most of us have gotten colds or worse, and one of us has come down with a rather nasty case of herpes. I'm not going to go into details about the sexual stuff. The attached photo is me and my posse (Me with the leather jacket and the crazed look on my face) dancing around and on top of our bus. Yes, those towers behind us are speakers.

Thought I'd share with you this rediculous tradition. Someone must find it interesting. If you'd like to know more about it, just ask. I recommend you check out the wikipedia-article. It has tons of info.

Sure it's fun. It's very fun. But oh-so-dumb.

So come on up to Norway and join the celebration.

I guess us Nordic people do have a lot in common

Over here we have a tradition called 'dimissio' (latin for 'leave' or 'abandon'), which is when all kids in high school dress up and drink like crazy just before the finals. So the city becomes full of drunken teens in silly costumes. And in my school (the oldest in and who started the whole mess), we get driven around town in a truck first XD

Ours lasts for weeks. I think ours started 24th of april or very close to that, and it always ends on 17th of May, which is our national day.

There's people I know that is still not sure where they were during that time, heh.

And those knots that you get in your hat.. .dammit, I've never been as nauseus as when I tried to take some of the food ones. Basically it's either eat a stupid huge amount of something, or mix something that's extremely icky together if not by themselves. It's all set up beforehanded though.

The best one I remember was the one to wear skis to school all day. Interesting when it's green grass, asphalt and gravel. Cough.

The one that was most painful was NOT sleeping in a tree a whole night or any of the other silly ones, it was actually keeping a full pack of Hubba Bubba (bubble gum) in your mouth a whole class. My jaws ached for two days afterwards.

I've heard about this, but I didn't know you did it for that long. In Finland we usually dress up in varying costumes and have a party in the school where we humiliate the younger students, then we ride on lorries around the town square. Then there's one night of drinking. But a month? Crazy.

Eating knots: eating raw fish, eating cat-food, two large packs of bubblegum for an hour, cooking noodles in beer etc.

That bubblegum one, I chose a variety that was so sour that my teeth almost fell out, atleast it felt like that.

In America we call it college.

It was tons of fun when I did it. That's over ten years ago though, and it seems the money pressure has gone through the roof from what I hear from people having kids that age. We didn't spend that much money except for getting the car fit to go through checkup and insurance, and also the tickets for the events weren't even close to the amounts it seems to be today. Seems there's a ton more different clothes and extra stuff attached to it as well. *shrug* Maybe the financial crisis will make it back down again

I can be grumpy now when I hear them driving around at night, but hell, I had fun and it lasts for a month. Let them have their fun, heh.

    Yeah, I agree.
There's way too much money involved in these projects nowadays. I'll see if I can get some pictures from inside the bus. Looks like a tour bus for some huge band. The money thing really shows.

Perhaps you noticed that I was the only one on the picture without one of them college-jackets. Well, that's because I think it's disgusting how much we've already spent and don't wanna spend any more.

    EDIT: Got a picture.

It was fun, but I took it pretty easy compared to most.

Too many people go overboard with the drinking, alot of people drive while under the influence and it seems violence goes through the roof for those two weeks...

And the fucking whistles keep me awake at night...
