Icon IDW #100: The Mechanical Man - SPECIAL ROUND!

IDW #100: The Mechanical Man - SPECIAL ROUND!

    Topic: The Mechanical Man

Background: One of the oldest icons of the science fiction genre is the robot. Whether it is to help with the household, do work no human can do in circumstances nobody would want to work in, take care of our boring daily tasks or to fight our wars, for some reason they are always shaped in resemblance to their creators.

For this special round, you can interpret the topic pretty widely. The time period, style or job you design this mechanical man for is totally up to you (note, ‘man’ here can also mean it’s female). It does not necessarily have to look humanoid either, although be careful not to wander off from the topic too far.

A few additional notes before you start sketching away though. First, you are required not only to make a full rendering of your mechanical man, but also orthogonal drawings of it. Your design has to be completely worked out and basically be ready for modeling in 3D. I will not take half-finished work to poll.

Secondly, the winning entry will be put on the new banner of IDW! The old one needs updating, and so the winners’ robot will become the face of IDW for at least another 50 rounds. This means however, that you have to be able to provide me with your robot on a plain (white) background, though you are allowed to add a background to your final entry for this round. I’ll contact the winner afterwards for the plain one.

Edit: Obviously, drawing a human with little or no visible signs of being a robot for this round will not do!

Thirdly, there are prizes to be won this round! Awesome prizes at that too, check it out further down this post.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw The Mechanical Man
    2. Include orthogonal drawings (front, side and back views minimum) in your entry.
    3. Since the winning entry will be on the new IDW banner, you have to be able to provide your robot with a plain (or no) background! Including a background in your final entry is okay as long as you have a second version without it for me to put on the banner.
    4. That's it... now draw!

Deadline: Saturday, May 30 Yes, this will be a month long contest instead of the normal one week.

    ------------------------------

    Prizes:

For this very special round of IDW there will be prizes beyond the mere honor of winning the poll! Jason and MB have been so good as to provide the following prizes:

    1st Place:
    - A ticket for the next Massive Black Workshop (or for any workshop really, to be used only once though).
    - Downloads of all Massive Black and CA Tutorial and Instructional DVD’s

    2nd Place:
    - Downloads of up to 6 Massive Black and CA Tutorial and Instructional DVD’s.

    3rd Place:
    - Downloads of up to 2 Massive Black and CA Tutorial and Instructional DVD’s.

a quick sketch to get things going
was thinking of something from the 1700
glass see through corset, a masquerade mask, and the robot from the wizard of oz movie the tinman

and the issue of how not making it to CHOW?
are there any guidelines like in COW?
its not an individual but a specimen of a group or something?

    Poshspice: Thanks

Kisou: Hm good point. 'Industrial Design' usually means mass produced products, or at least products created in smaller series, not just a single hand crafted unique product. However, since part of this round is to design the new avatar for IDW, it will need some character to be convincing as figurehead for this activity. I won't be very strict on the whole deal, but when in doubt just ask me

I would have to agree with kisou, this seems something rather to CHOW or COW posts. I guess i can give it a shot.

Hehe uhm, what coco said, it means Massive Black not Megabite I changed it in the description though, as it might be a bit confusing I guess.

For all: I updated the topic slightly! Mostly just trying to prevent that people come up with a human shape with no or little visible signs of being an android, which simply won't do as avatar for this activity.

Wow!!! I don't expect too win and I've only completed a few CHOWS but this is something I intend to get my teeth into. Should be a great learning experience.

Wow, this is a great topic! I have been wanting to draw a robot or something for ages but haven't comed to it yet. I think I'll try and enter this round, never done a IDW before.

By the way, does the video to Björk's song "All Is Full Of Love" come to mind for anyone else? I hope it's ok if I post it, as something that might give inspiration to people, if it ain't then I'll take it down.

    2. Include orthogonal drawings (front, side and back views minimum) in your entry.
Just a question- do these have to be fully rendered, or can they be sketchier/"blueprint"ier, and still have the fully rendered/finished pic? Because providing 3+ full-fledged pics sounds... Like a lot. I know it's a month... Just wondering. I'm stoked for the project (though it's open, which means landing on a final idea is.. hard ), I just would like to focus my efforts on one polished piece, and then draw up the required schematics, angles, etc as more of a guide to what's not being shown...?

    Anyways, I'll get crackin!

MichaelNoel: They can be just lines or blueprint-like if you want, but make sure everything you need to tell is in your final image. 'Sketchy' ortho's usually only contain rough estimates and proportions, so make sure they're at least finished in that way. You've got a whole month and big prizes to win, so I will be rather strict with what goes to poll this round I'm afraid.

    Sounds awesome
To be honest though I have no idea what i'm gonna do ? I got so many ideas but i'm so indecisive
I guess i'll just think about necessity and see what I can come up with.
A whole month... sweet i'll easily to able to finish a decent render this time

Question, the subject says mechanical man but, you also say no android type things does this mean stay away from designs such as the robots from Bicentennial Man and I Robot that loosely would resemble a man or basically no robots that look completely human such as Data from Star-Trek and Bishop from Aliens.

some examples of pre-3d orthographic drawings....fairly basic ones......I think they are cool though.... these are for Abe's
Oddysee.... even though the game was 2d they had some 3d animated movies so thats probably what these drawings were for.
    Pretty mint stuff!

kMh: The latter, mostly. There's no point in having a IDW avatar that looks almost or totally like a human, so be very careful there. I Robot types of androids are totally okay though. Basically, if it's clear enough it is a robot and not a human it should be okay. Just keep in mind it's going to be the IDW avatar, so it has to stand for what this activity is all about.
