help out a rookie - how to get started

after having doodled the one millionth chick and sphere in photoshop cs3 on my new intuos3 i figured it was time to get serious.

but it didn't turn out that well. i figured i have massive problems setting up my brush to do exactly as i like. what is the difference between opacity and flow? what opacity and flow do you work with during sketching, shading and coloring? what does the "airbrush" button do when you are working with the brush tool?

how can i edit what brush-characteristic is influenced by tablet-pen-pressure?
it seems to switch randomly from "brush size" to "opacity".

what brushes do you guys use mostly for the basic sketching?

for now thats all, any comments appreciated.

i know i could find out most of this stuff on my own but believe me i tried, and searching the forums i couldn't find anything specific.

hard round brush tool with size/opacity set on pressure for sketching

hard round to block in the colors/values. Either opacity set on pressure or set size on pressure and opacity set to 60%

opacity set on pressure = gets more opaque with more pressure
flow set on pressure = harder edge with pressure

You change the brush transparency with the 1-0 keys , where 1 = 10 % and 0 = 100% . When it is set to Airbrush , the number keys change the flow instead of the opacity.
