Exclamation The how do I get banned? thread.

This is a free site and open community. However, all mods and admins have ability to ban. It happens for many reasons but there is one thing in common with all who have been banned to date...they earned it.

After seeing a flood of new folks this year, we need to make a few things clear again.

    Things not to do:

    act abusively

    spam posts

too much promotion and no contribution

giving mods or admins headaches, thus wasting their valuable time, during or after they make polite requests. polite discussion is always fine. insults and bad behavior earn the ban hammer.

causing mods to have to repeatedly remove garbage posts, rants, or stupidity, because the user does not think before they pushed submit.

piracy support or posting pirated materials

    legal matters

and any other legit reason the admins or mods may come across

Ugh, why are legal matters in the list? Or is it referring to something specific?

I'm guessing "legal matters" is a catch all for things that might open CA itself to legal action. I can't immediately think of any that don't fall under the piracy heading, but I'm sure there are many.

As J Wilson said, it's not so much a discussion over "legal matters" but matters that may find CA in a bad position or liable.

I had banned a user condoning shoplifting and stealing of art supplies. I don't know if you call "stealing physical art supplies" piracy in the sense that people usually associate it with software.

I thought it looked like this would boil down to two categories: 1. don't be immature, and 2. don't take undue advantage, but then I realized those two boil down to 1. don't be a jerk.

I also think this should be a sticky, because

I suppose this refers to filesharing and the use of cracks/keygens. It's not that obvious and an easy mistake to make, especially because different countries have different positions on the issue.

I do not support piracy here, just saying...

Reminds me, after my company finishes the move...I'll be definitely working on the sandbox version of the forums to see what fixes I can put in to kill more spambots.

I also want to see if it's ok to make a "sketchbook" icon that would sit in a user's postbit like how the AIM and other icons sit in them currently.

I also wanted to follow some other suggestions on improving the "Thanks" mod as a tracker.

...but I'm derailing here -_-;;; I am more fascinated with fixing up VBs to make them more efficient and workable for CA than anything else. I try to stay out of the other stuff as much as possible but, mostly I smite spambots on a daily basis.

Actually, its a good question. Some art related to Loli/Hentai/porn fetishes could create legal concerns. If it does then where do we as a community draw the line and say "you can't post art of *this*"?

Wasn't there a big argument over in the art discussion forum a while ago about that, concerning nude-drawings of underage models?

That would fall under "legal reasons" and not under "art", in that case, and would come down to the decision of the admin/mod in question.

It seems to me that "legal reasons" explains why their art isn't acceptable and may be an offence worthy of a ban, but in the end the person is still getting banned because of their art; more specifically the subject matter of their art.

So ArtZealot's "don't be rediculous" is not exactly spot on.

Out of curiosity, if one is banned from the forums are they also banned from events such as workshops?

How do you get banned for "too much promotion and not enough contribution"?

Better yet, can you explain what you mean by "too much promotion and not enough contribution"? and why it would seem negative on a free site?

We've had a bunch of cases where people come on this site and post stuff where it is *this close* to spam. First few times we let it slide, but if someone ONLY posts stuff to pimp their site/project/etc, refuses to take crits on it, puts it in the wrong places, and doesn't even post art with it, then finally we decide it's more like spam and less like awesome and ban them.

Posting awesome art in the FF section will never do this to you, though.

Don't totally understand the 'why would it seem negative on a free site' question. Because it's basically really annoying-self advertising? Why it would make a difference between a free site and a pay site I'm not sure.

Ah ok, I had a totally different picture of what that meant. Now that I get it, my last question has no relevance to the rule. It makes sense now.
